Tennessee ranks 4th in hate groups
The number of hate groups across the country is on the rise, according to new findings by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and Tennessee ranks fourth among states with the most hate groups.
The Spring 2016 edition of the SPLC’s investigative journal, the Intelligence Report, chronicled the growing concern.
The law center found a 14 percent national increase in hate groups, from 784 to 892, between 2014 and 2015 and that 41 hate groups existed in Tennessee last year.
The groups listed in Tennessee included several chapters of white supremacist and white nationalist, black separatist, neo-Nazi and anti-Muslim groups, and stretched from Memphis to the farthest reaches of East Tennessee.
