Response from Portman re: Scalia vacancy.

As expected, as waste of time writing to this a$$hat but I figured what the heck, it's worth 2 minutes to tell him to get off his butt and do his job. I also reminded him that the American people did have a vote on this...twice...and in both elections picked BHO to represent them in this nomination.

Oh well. Hopefully he can return to his private law practice here in Cincinnati in January.

Canned response with all the usual incorrect facts follows:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the current vacancy on the United States Supreme Court. I appreciate you taking the time to contact me on this important issue.

As you know, we are in the midst of a presidential election and a vigorous debate within both political parties on the direction of the country, with the election less than nine months away. I believe the best thing for the country is to trust the American people to weigh in on who should make a lifetime appointment that could reshape the Supreme Court for generations.

It is common practice for the Senate to stop acting on lifetime appointments during the last year of a presidential term, and it's been nearly 80 years since any president was permitted to immediately fill a vacancy that arose in a presidential election year. I have supported some of President Obama's federal court nominees and opposed others, based on their qualifications. Whether the next president is a Republican or Democrat, I will judge any nominee on the merits, as I always have.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. For more information, you can visit my website at www.portman.senate.gov. Please keep in touch.

Sincerely,

Rob Portman
U.S. Senator

Maybe we should get his wife to tell him what he should do on this. It seemed to work pretty well in reversing his stance on gay marriage. Of course it helped that his son came out and his wife told him to "not come home" until he dealt with his change of heart in public. (At least that's the rumor around town...and among people who know his wife...their opinion is "yep - that's sounds exactly like her&quot .

Why couldn't we have elected her instead of him ?

Perhaps you should educate him to the facts, since he obviously doesn't understand how the system works.

President Barack Obama is doing his job as described in the Constitution of the United States. It clearly states it is the presidents job to nominate a candidate and the senate confirms whether or not to vote for or against. Pretty simple really.

All this back and forth is nothing. I don't know why everyone is even discussing it. Yes the Repugs started it but they will vote.

on who should make a lifetime appointment that could reshape the Supreme Court for generations.

I believe that happened on November 6, 2012, when Obama beat Mittwit by 5 million votes.
