etherealtruth - Nikki Haley is his best bet if he wants to win. He needs someone to the right of him, someone religious, if he wants to get out the vote.

I don't think he'll pick his sons (I'm not sure how old they are but the 2 older ones are adults with young families of their own I think) I suppose he could pick his daughter, LOL. But if Hillary wins, and I think she will (though I like Bernie better, but I have no say as a Canadian) I absolutely think there will be a woman VP pick on the republican ticket. It's how they roll. And it won't be Sarah Palin...Trump's face during her speech when she endorsed him said it all

After he gets the nomination, Trump's obvious move will be to unite the party. Haley would be a great choice for that, plus the establishment will want to have their VP around to keep an eye on the insurgent nominee... just like they forced Bush onto Reagan in 1980. If you don't think that's their M.O., you're not paying attention to history.

And after Trump secures the nomination, there is no horse named Rubio. Trump has already signaled that he's not going to keep up the madman routine for much longer. He told Chris Wallace already it's all been about getting the free PR and standing out from the crowd for the nomination. He's going to pivot some time in the next 6 weeks and start acting more mature to shore up his base in the party. Then after the convention, another pivot, and he'll start playing the outsider card again, emphasizing how easily Clinton is being controlled by Wall Street.

He's already telegraphed this move. Read the article below and think strategically. How else could he win the White House? He's certainly not going to keep up the thug act if it starts to harm his chances.

clinical narcissist, he understands well enough all the assets and liabilities any prospective VP would bring. Nimrata Randhawa is an attractive woman who was elected to office in these remarkable times by John Bircher types who prefer to be called tea partiers. He is also vulnerable to those who sponge up to him, and I'm guessing she could handle that task quickly and competently.

The only thing I can see her doing is Challenging Graham for the senators seat. That would be a fun primary.

An establishment Republican who took the #2 slot to lend some credibility to the ticket, and therefore minimize the harm to the downticket races, would be seen as taking one for the team. He or she would automatically join the Great Mentioner's shortlist for 2020.

And, of course, there's always the chance that the ticket might win.

The only establishment Republicans who might turn him down would be those like Kelly Ayotte who have their own tough re-elections to tend to.

It didn't help Joe Lieberman, it didn't help John Edwards, and it didn't help Caribou Barbie. It remains to be seen whether it will help Ryan, but SOTH has a justified reputation as being a dead end job that leads to nothing.

Would she have gotten that nice Fox gig, and would she have been able to scam so much money for her SarahPAC, if McCain hadn't picked her? I'm betting No. Also, if she had chosen to seek the nomination in 2012, she would have had at least some chance of it, much more than if she hadn't made the 2008 run.

A losing VP candidate may later get the nomination (like Dole) or at least be taken more seriously as a contender than would have been the case without the run (Muskie, Kemp, Lieberman).

The main point, though, is that a Trump candidacy would be an unusual event, one not be judged solely by historical precedents. The GOP establishment would be having fits. They'd probably write off the White House and devote all their energy to other races. They'd be grateful to someone like Gov. Mike Pence (R-IN) who agreed to run with Trump and give the ticket some veneer of respectability, thus helping other Republican candidates.

Of course, whether Trump would want such a running mate is another matter. He might see that choice as undercutting his "outsider" image. It's hard to figure out what he would do. What about Gov. Gary Johnson, who in 2012 came in third on the Libertarian ticket? He'd bring government experience but still not be seen as part of the current dysfunctional system.

He'll do what he's told to do by the GOP insiders. If Trump does not finish his term (if elected, I think he'll be the first president to be successfully impeached and removed from office after he pisses off Congress) Rubio can step up to the big chair. If Trump decides not to run for a second term once he realizes how hard the job is, Rubio will be the logical next candidate, and now that he's had experience in a job that doesn't actually tax him the party will through its resources behind him. Even if Trump somehow manages to make it through two terms, Rubio will still be young enough to be a viable candidate in '24.
