This is crazy. Everyone knows that it is really hard to be a single mother. Not only are you making decisions alone that will affect your childs life forever, you can be 100 percent financially responsible for them. But Springfield, Ill. Republicans want to punish new single mothers by making their lives even harder.
Now, legislators have a bill that says, if there is no father to sign the birth certificate, the state will not issue that child a birth certificate.
Thats insane. A child without a birth certificate can be barred from public schools and universities, any hope of ever receiving financial assistance, getting a passport, and even getting a drivers license. Since a birth certificate is the legal document that serves as proof of US citizenship, a child without one will never even be able to apply for a Social Security number.
Republican representatives John D Cavaletto and Keith Wheeler sponsored the bill that would amend the states Vital Records Act. Here is the bills draconian thrust:
provides that if the unmarried mother cannot or refuses to name the childs father, either a father must be conclusively established by DNA evidence or, within 30 days after birth, another family member who will financially provide for the child must be named, in court, on the birth certificate.
Provides that absent DNA evidence or a family members name, a birth certificate will not be issued and the mother will be ineligible for financial aid from the State for support of the child.

(111,261 posts)once someone points out it only punishes "good" women who didn't have abortions after they were raped....or merely abandoned after being threatened by the sperm donor with bodily harm should he be named.

(31,935 posts)these people think that rape victims deserved it and men are never to blame for anything. Basically they detest women who aren't a man's "property", just like the Taliban or Daesh. This is further evidence of their sexist ego driven madness.

(14,857 posts)It's a fact, they don't give a flying fuck about them after they're born. They're perfectly happy to hurt the children in order to shame and punish the mothers.

Wonder how many out-of-wedlock kids those "representatives" are trying to weasel out of supporting?

(13,421 posts)This proposed bill is not rooted in any sort of legal reality in the state of Illinois. Had a long conversation about this bill yesterday with a child support enforcement attorney here in Illinois. The negative impact of this bill will be on the children and families, period. Essentially, passage of this bill is gonna leave those kids in a legal "limbo" of non-citizenship. The will not be given Social Security numbers, nor can they apply for a passport, or even a driver's license. They will be unable to register to vote, as well.
I agree with the statements that it can't withstand the test of a court, but the biggest issue is what happen to these kids and families in the meantime?

A human being born in the United States is an American citizen and has rights that are protected under the Constitution. No legislation can take that away. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.
I'm sick of these fucking self-righteous, cruel nutjobs.

When will men learn to stay out of women's business. These men have serious mommy issues!
Just because a woman isn't married doesn't necessarily mean the father is unknown or unnamed.
And if she chooses not to name the father, who gives a fuck?

tested in a court.
TreasonousBastard
(43,049 posts)point to it other than punishing a woman for having a child out of wedlock, but it opens up terrible challenges for rape pregnancies that go to term, sperm banks, and just plain ol' privacy.
And while it pretends to punish the mother, it is really punishing the child who will grow up with no identity. He or she won't vote, go to school, or have any basic rights.
Now, the workaround would be to get a baptismal certificate, which restores at least some of those rights and identity questions. That, however is a sorry thing to have to do to solve an inhuman problem that shouldn't exist to begin with.
With any luck, this thing will die a quick death.

(5,946 posts)they no longer printed bastard on baby birth certificates. She was reading the paper and said if that were true when my friend was born the mother would have never married the father.
Republicans want to go back to shaming women when they get pregnant outside of marriage and for men, well it is just boys will be boys - free viagra for all!!!! but birth control will cost you.
I know that enough women hate other women because they did not have the nerve to ever have fun when they were young. Heck, I still have fun as an old person. must make me a li-brul

(61,695 posts)For awhile, the excuse to not have an abortion was that the mom could get state aid to help raise her child, so no abortion is needed. Now that it's almost impossible to get one in many places, they are looking for ways to deny state aid to single moms and babies.
These people are beyond cruel. It's one thing to deny public assistance. But to deny the b.c. basically turns the baby into a non-person.

(20,176 posts)The states may not do or take any action that in any way impedes or abrogates the assertion of citizenship of any rightful US citizen.
Either Illinois will be forced to capitulate and overturn this law, it will be struck by the courts or it'll lead to something conservatives hate the idea of even more...a national birth registry.

And why can't the mother be the main support?
