Wichitans Barb Fuller and Carole Neal didnt realize they were leaders of a communist organization.
It was kind of shocking, Neal said.
But according to Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, thats what the League of Women Voters is communist.
Thats absurd, of course though not out of character for Kobach.
Formed nearly 100 years ago from the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the league is dedicated to expanding voter participation so that all Americans can have a voice in our democratic republic. It conducts voter-registration drives and regularly hosts forums to help inform voters about candidates and issues.
But Kobach doesnt like that the league filed a lawsuit arguing that Brian Newby, executive director of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, illegally granted Kansas, Georgia and Alabama permission to change federal voter-registration forms to require proof of citizenship

The League of Women Voters has two things Kobach and Brownback and all the other GOPers hate: women and voters. Other than that.....
BTW, isn't calling someone a communist sort of antiquated?

(25,966 posts)The fact that Sanders has the level of popularity he does, while still being associated with the word "socialist" says a lot about how much things have changed since the 60s, but still "socialism" and "communism" have major negative connotations for a lot of people. Even people who actually approve of socialist policies, but don't know it.

(30,674 posts)back in the 80s--clearly they were forced to withdraw due to the intransigence of Republicans. Now the Debates are owned by FOX. They rent the property out to CNN etc out of the goodness of their hearts and a massive cut of the proceeds.
I'm not kidding. They do this through strategic local media monopolies, made possible by the 1996 Media law Clinton signed (Congress would have passed it over his veto)
"The League sponsored the United States presidential election debates in 1976, 1980 and 1984.[6][7] On October 2, 1988, the LWV's 14 trustees voted unanimously to pull out of the debates, and on October 3 they issued a press release condemning the demands of the major candidates' campaigns. LWC President Nancy Neuman said that the debate format would "perpetrate a fraud on the American voter" and that the organization did not intend to "become an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public."[8][9]"
