Hearing on Grand Jury Issues in Florida Deputy Shooting Case
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. Feb 25, 2016, 8:38 AM ET
Issues surrounding grand jury proceedings are to be discussed at a hearing in the case of a Florida deputy charged with manslaughter in the shooting of a man carrying an air rifle.
Prosecutors want a judge to prevent the attorney for suspended Broward Sheriff's Office Deputy Peter Peraza from gaining access to certain evidence involving the grand jury that indicted him. The hearing is set for Thursday afternoon.
Peraza has pleaded not guilty in the 2013 shooting of 33-year-old Jermaine McBean, who was carrying an authentic-looking air rifle. McBean's family insists he was listening to music through earbuds and did not hear police commands to drop the rifle. McBean was black. Peraza is white.
Earlier hearings focused on whether McBean's mental problems played a role in the shooting.
