The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph.
What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated.

(This is a lot classier that the big fat fuck you I was about to post. Anyone who would abandon their country to this orangutan fucker is useless to the cause of liberty. Stay on and fight by ballot and picket, by phone call and by blog and by open acts of defiance against his goosesteps to fascism. But leave, and you validate Trump's victory and prove you're the loser he's called you)

And if anybody decides to leave because of that, I will not get in the way, or be critical of them. I wish frankly, MORE JEWS were able to leave Europe before the final stage of the holocaust.

(54,019 posts)Once a dictator starts the killing, sure, by all means run for your life. But where did they want to run to? Right here. Shame on us for turning them away. But a tyrant has to be strangled in the crib. He has to be fought where he is, not given free reign just because he's fooled 50%+1 into voting for him.
Besides, isn't the lesson of Hitler that, if you don't fight him here, he fights you there, wherever he's run to? If Trumpism is given free reign in the US, what on earth makes you think his example won't catch on in Europe, Australia, or Prince Edward Island? No, sorry, no sale. Running is never the right way to deal with fascism.

(15,189 posts)Will he also start locking up the gays? His followers think gays should have to leave the US. And we have a GOP congress and senate who feel the same way.

(12,754 posts)My grandparents looked around their country and said "Screw this shit." And they came here. I'm glad they did. My life is infinitely better than what it would have been had they stayed and had they -- and I -- survived.
Sometimes you just have to take stock and do what you need to do to protect yourself and make a better life.
If Trump wins, it's not going to be a sign of a hopeful and better future. It's a sign that we're about to go over the falls. You can stay and paddle in vain if you want. Good luck with that.

(54,019 posts)We're the example the world follows over and over. If America gets Trumpified, where could you run to where the example would NOT spread? You think Canada, Europe, Australia, or other popular run-tos don't have their own nascent Trumpettes? Sorry, but you don't fight a house fire by shutting the door.

Trump left unchallenged in the biggest economy and most powerful nation in the world is a scenario where there is no refuge possible in the world. He has to be stopped where he is here... and if we can't keep him out of the Oval Office, he has to be hamstrung and counter punched by as many people as we can muster right here.
Running to another country doesn't solve the problem; it just delays the solution until the problem gets bigger.

I just don't think the world's big enough anymore that anyone can run away from the global consequences of a Trump victory here.

(16,245 posts)I am tired of idiots voting for idiots. I am tired of the hate from the "low-information" voters towards, well, just about anything not like them. I'm tired of Democrats not even trying to do the right thing anymore, because no matter what happens, it is more corporate watered-down nonsense that we have to accept because "No, we can't". And to be honest, that's probably true. One, because most Democrats are cowards, but also because the forces of true evil are arrayed against. And because they have no spines. How can they possibly compete with Koch brothers money poisoning everything.?
I no longer really give a shit. The idiots have won.

(32,017 posts)Rs said it in 2008 and 2012. Ds said it in 2000 and 2004. Nobody ever leaves. Two reasons. The imagined fascism doesn't ever come. Most countries have no interest in Americans unless they are rich and/or have special skills that does not compete with their own population.

(12,471 posts)As long as there is open internet communications, and expats are allowed to vote, I can do a good part of what I do here, overseas.
I do not want to be caught up in some police raid of radicals. I do not want to go to jail for using my 1st Amendment rights.
I have been an activist for more than 45 years, I shall not stop if I move overseas. Things will just be a bit different.

(54,019 posts)It's a metaphor, obviously. What I mean is, organize, protest, obstruct, and GOTV. You don't fight fascism with fascism. You fight it with information. That's what those little stickers mean when you put them on your computer. Or on Woody's guitar.

(33,582 posts)or the massive anti-Iraq War protests i marched in?
Yeah that turned things around.
Sorry, this country doesn't deserve fighting for if it elects Trump.
maybe I'll come back to help rebuild it from the rubble.

(115,677 posts)What an odd thing to think. And calling people who do not want to live in the country under him "loser", "useless to the cause of liberty" and giving a "big fat fuck you" (note to any jury, those are copied from the Op) seems pretty darn nasty.
