Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIf Trump is nominated, establishment Republicans will primarily fear losing the Senate.
Since they fear Trump will lose, they would hate to give the Democrats both the Presidency and the Senate.
Which means Obama can pressure the current Senate to cooperate on a Supreme Court nomination if not much more. Or he might want to put forward a noted liberal judge just so they turn him or her down and look uncooperative.
Despite how frightening it is, I think Trump's nomination can be a good thing.

(13,598 posts)Yes, it's true both that Trump might win and that he would be a bad president if he did.
But it's also certainly true that he would be much less likely to win than Rubio or Cruz, and I think it's quite likely that they'd both be worse presidents.

(43,049 posts)He might actually be able to do some of the crap he's thinking about.
If Trump gets in the White House, there will probably be pools up about how long it will take to impeach him. At any rate, he'll get little done because you don't just order people around in DC.
Rubio just doesn't have the stuff to get things done. He'll be snookered and stalled worse than Obama has been.
Kasich, OTOH, is smooth and knows his way around, he'd be really scary if he had a chance.

(5,586 posts)We're going to nominate Hillary, and our turnout is going to be significantly less than in 2008 and 2012. If we turned out like we did in 2008, I'd say we have a good chance, by with lower turnout expectations, I won't hold my breath.

(19,359 posts)that it could be a blow-out. What Republican will be pounding the pavement getting out the vote? What senator will waste his or her credibility by actively backing him?
But the OP was on the effects of Trump's eventual nomination on the Senate's behavior, and I think it will have a positive benefit.
Thus, Trump's nomination is likely a win-win.

reportedly told colleagues they will drop GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump like a hot rock.
McConnell reassured Republican members of the upper chamber they could run negative ads against Trump if he becomes the nominee and it threatens their re-election, reports The New York Times.
Additionally, McConnell told Republican senators during the members weekly lunch that the potential of Trump losing to Hillary Clinton is a given and it is best to describe to voters that a Republican Senate is a necessary check to a Clinton presidency.

(182 posts)controls so much. By minority I mean the GOP. I believe the majority in the US is liberal, does not support GOP policies, yet GOP has gerrymandered and control so many local, state govts and of course Congress. While it's good to fight for the presidency, I feel like Democrats don't concentrate on anything else! I also blame myself in that I have no idea when elections are here! Every once in a while I find out by seeing signs up somewhere but I had no idea there was some election. Granted, I moved here somewhat recently. It also seems like there are more elections than need be, at least around here. I will go try to find out some info but I think this points to the fact that people are not getting information and if you are not motivated to find out, you most definitely will not vote.

(111 posts)If you think Sanders is going to raise your taxes, or Clinton is going to work for Wall Street bankers, which do you vote for if you are a Republican and HATE TRUMP? I think I'll take my chances with Sanders if it comes to Trump and him in the election. At least with Sanders I'll get something for my money's worth. Trump will only do things that benefit Trump. He's the greediest person I have ever seen on TV or read about for thirty years. He has taken both sides of every issue and is the least trustworthy person of the five Republican candidates running for office. Just think back to what you thought of Trump twenty years ago, and that's who you have running for office now. Same guy. Same draft dodging, self-congratulatory, greedy person today as then. What's a Republican to do?
