So, even though the Welsh blood has been very diluted - I'm very much an American "mutt" - there is just enough to appreciate the greeting!

(26,268 posts)I was just reading an article about the Welsh critiquing movies with non-Welsh actors portraying Welsh characters, and how dreadful the accents are when delivered by non-Welsh actors. Much like the language, itself, the accent is not easy to master.

(15,369 posts)(Hinterland) set in Wales? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_Gwyll
Here's some more about it from The Guardian: http://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2013/jul/30/hinterland-tv-noir-wales
There is an all-Welsh version and another that is bilingual (English and Welsh).

(26,268 posts)I watched a really interesting movie, the other night, called "Pride". It is based on a true story of a Gay/Lesbian group from London who threw their lot in to support Welsh miners, during a strike. As the Grand daughter and Great-Grand daughter of Welsh Miners, it was something that struck a note, with me. Some of the cast was Welsh but they all gave very good performances.

My maternal grandfather worked in coal mines in England as a youth before immigrating to America in 1910, so I have some coal mining background myself.
A very good friend is Welsh. Both she and her sister are medical professionals and very supportive of the NHS. They told me that the idea for the NHS actually came from Wales, which - like Scotland - is much more liberal than England itself.

(63,912 posts)my mother's side couldn't get more Scottish with surnames Campbell and Brown...
My Grandfather's name was Elsworth Llewellyn Thomas, and his father' was Llewellyn Thomas. Pretty serious Welsh.
I'm now investigating any familial ties to the poet Dylan Thomas, since my branch of the Thomas family also came from Swansea. It's a long shot, but would be priceless, to me, if there is any even remote relationship.

Have you had your lineage looked up?
I know my Campbell forebear came in 1790 to America (I don't know why but I suspect The Clearances by the English of the Scots). That was harsh. People lost their land and their ability to survive. The Brits weren't all that nice, you know...

(26,268 posts)Now no one knows what happened to the documents! So I'm going to sign on with Ancestry.com to redo the family tree. I do know that they traced the family back to around the 1200's and found an authenticated family crest. It's got to be an interesting story because before they left Wales, they were coal miners and by the time they arrived in America, they were circus performers!!

(26,268 posts)I especially love Northern Wales. And, I've learned from personal experience that the Welsh will embrace their own, no matter where they come from. If you want to meet the friendliest people in the UK, IMHO, go to Wales or Scotland.
