The author's analysis of why Trump is popular is really informative and I also found it interesting the description of the different types of conservatives. Some of the information I had heard before, but some of it was new to me.

(19,066 posts)Trump is scary and he is pushing fascism. He will be defeated this Fall, but that's not going to change the fact that there's a growing segment of American Society who are so gullible they'll welcome fascism with open arms. There needs to be some effort in this country to bring this group back to reality.

Great point. 20th century fascists lost elections before they preyed on the gullible to eventually win them. Defeating Trump and fascism once will not be enough but it is where we have to start.

(6,496 posts)to organize such an effort. The democratic party needs to figure out a strategy for attracting these voters, without putting off the core of the party. I think if they can do that, then they can talk some sense into these people and minimize all this craziness. I'm just not sure they can. The republicans maybe could too, but I think they need to remake their party first, which will take even longer. Republicans don't have any faith in their own party right now.

(36,470 posts)I was reading it & thought, "This guy stole right out of George Lakoff's book!" Then I scrolled up & saw the author was . . . George Lakoff.
Too bad the dems don't use Lakoff to counter the bullshit of Frank Luntz.

(53,410 posts)It actually helped me understand the conservative mindset a bit more.
Conservatives think of having a father figure type as a leader and liberals think in terms of having more of a spouse type.

(6,496 posts)Conservative: values compliance to authority
Liberal: values inquisitiveness, it is ok to question authority
I notice that seems to be a big difference between people I know who are conservatives and liberals. Conservative families also seem to have the dad that lays down the law. Liberal families I think are perhaps more willing listen to their child's perspective and try to reason with the child, if the child is old enough for it. It's not all black and white like that, of course, but seems to be the preferred mode of operation of both types of families.
