(51 posts)Excellent suggestion from KamaAina, but what was not said was that Tim Canova is running against Debbie Wafflewoman Schultz in the Democratic primary. As someone elsewhere has said: Despair is NOT an option. You dont see Republicans giving up. We defeat them time and again and they still come back. We are in a war for the hearts and minds. Wafflewoman-Schultz is just one skirmish.
So if you are ticked off, do something! Send Tim $3, $5, $10 or more to help him fight the good fight! ActBlue is the Democratic Fund Raising organization to help Democrats. So if you have some mad money burning a hole in your pocket, turn it loose helping a fellow Democratic Progressive.
Youll find a bunch of Democratic Progressives at Blue America/ActBlue:

(32,723 posts)They know people are going to find themselves trapped. People tend to borrow the limit of $500 and have to re-borrow every month because they cant afford a $500 hit on their salary.
Here's how I tell people to get out of the $500 a month borrowing cycle. Ask yourself what you CAN afford (I'll use $100 less a month as an example). The next time you go in only borrow $400 instead of $500. The time after that borrow $300, then $200 and then $100. Then don't go back. You are free and clear.
JDPriestly
(57,936 posts)If they could only just borrow $50 per month, they would make some progress toward avoiding permanent debt and desperation.

About 15 years ago, when I lived there, the city of Cleveland tried to reign in predatory lenders. ALL of the big banks threatened, that if the legislation passed, they would not write ANY mortgages in the city of Cleveland limits.
The legislation passed anyway, and the banks followed through with their threats. You couldn't get a mortgage, 1st or 2nd, in the city.

(4,558 posts)Wrong is wrong, no matter if the person supports a candidate you support or not.. and this is wrong.
I ALMOST got to a point of arguing with you. I looked up the bill:
https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/4018
-to see what the actual wording was.
I was just about to type a post to argue with you and the article... the more I read down, the more I was thinking it was a good thing. It does have good requirements like:
establish a transaction database;
require a provider to verify through such database that a consumer entering into such a transaction does not have an outstanding transaction;
require a provider to report immediately to such database information about each transaction entered into and each transaction paid or settled;
require that a transaction agreement be in writing and allow the consumer to rescind the agreement within the first 24 hours;
require a transaction agreement to limit the interest and fees to no more that 10% of the transaction amount, the processing fee to $5, the transaction amount to $500, and the duration of the transaction to no less than seven days and no more than 31 days; and
allow a 60-day grace period after the contractual repayment date for a consumer to repay the amount due, subject to early termination if a consumer fails to complete a course with a consumer credit counseling agency.
Most of these sound fairly decent and reasonable to me. Then I got to the meat of the issue..
Personally I've written the Hillary campaign asking them to denounce this bill,
DWS herself asking an explanation.
Writing my representative is useless since he's a Republican asshole whom I'm focusing my efforts to see his ass out of office this year.
and a letter to the whitehouse.gov asking the president to pledge to veto it unless either the 2 year delay part of it is removed, or the restriction on the CFPB is removed.
The only thing i can think of that "might" justify it is if the 2 year grace was added as a compromise to get the Republican votes needed to pass the bill. IF that is her reason, a 2 years of shit to have legal, and nationally legislated requirements limiting interest and providing some protections might be somewhat justifiable.

This is how millions of low-income Americans, over-represented in black areas but across the board back have been screwed over by the very people they elected, who see them as prey, getting rid of the usury and other laws which protect them
The definition of two-faced ..
Good book , "Broke U.S.A.", by Rivlin, discusses how these traitors to the country have destroyed people's lives with what she is proposing. He outlines the "poor tax", the extra 10% of their income that people who make under $40K pay that others don't.
People who are well-off, phat and comfortable,ike the Real Estate Swindler or this purse-snatcher, bring more violence to and destroy more lives than any felon in history ever has.
I heard it said once, about a gang fight, that "public violence is a political statement". These proposals of hers on debt, or Wankpuffin's on health care, are telling you that there is a two-faced crook looking to steal from the money you work for.

Usury is a word we should hear a lot more often in our public discourse. I'm not sure many Americans today are familiar with the concept, but we see its tragic results everywhere.

(20,998 posts)...I might add, is doing her part to allow the most predatory of "financial institutions" another crack at the most vulnerable. In fact, she is actively working to reverse regulation to limit their reach and is even laying out the welcome mat.
And let me add my own personal speculation: Wasserman-Schultz is certainly NOT the Democratic Chair for her effectiveness...
"...huge losses Democrats have seen since Obama's election in 2008: The party has shed 69 House seats, 13 Senate seats, 12 governor's offices and more than 900 state legislative seats -- as well as 30 state legislative chambers.
Many of those losses were solidified after Democrats were drubbed in the 2010 midterms -- giving Republicans more power as states redrew their legislative district lines after the once-a-decade census.
Democrats now hold 3,172 of the nation's 7,383 state legislative seats, and 30 of the country's 99 state legislative chambers."
NO, Wasserman-Schultz is Chair of the DNC for one reason: her loyalty to all things Clinton. Further, Wasserman-Schultz has demonstrated several times in her own home state of Florida that she is more than willing to shunt the Democratic candidate aside and cooperate with Republican challengers IF IT SUITS HER OWN VESTED INTERESTS.

"See, the Democratic middle wants predatory lending, but I'm against it..." could be the talking point. Only problem is Hillary is not running against her sycophants, she's running against Bernie, who is a true populist, so hopefully the public we recogize her corparatist tilt.
Meanwhile, in Sandersville, a resounding "F.U." is broadcast to predatory lenders and their DLC enablers.
Bernie is on the right side of issues like this, while Hillary and Debbie play footsie with their dark masters on Wall Street.

PATRICK
(12,228 posts)Does anyone wonder why my union(American Postal Workers Union) supports Sanders and not the Third Way triumphalists?
Obama tries to appoint a payday loan shark to the Postal Board of Governors(among other blatantly objectionable candidates) and no this was not a bluff or chess move. Payday loan sharks I believe are donors to the Hillary campaign and now this hit from the Obama appointed, Hillary anointing DNC Chair.
The Union among others with the public interest(the banking disenfranchised) and especially the interest of the health of the USPS wanted to RETURN to the service of postal banking services- which the big private banks hate and wouldn't do anymore if they had a choice.
Crickets from the DINO's who presume to run the party. Leadership from Sanders, on this as on so many issues.
Furthermore how much has the establishment fought to remove the Congressional theft of funds from the postal budget that make it look so bad and destroy the stamp buyers power to finance- solely- the widest, best and cheapest hand delivery service on the globe?
This is not just to please payday loan sharks. It is another transparent attack on the Postal Service's growth so that this traditional sacrificial lamb for the corrupt can be carved up in pieces- destroying the network, degrading service, raising prices and stockmarketing an unbroken infrastructure to death at the hands of the usual suspects, people divorced from their own humanity by filthy greed.
When the union complained that 1(union busting lawyer) plus 1(Postal management hiring him)= collusion to privatize the service and destroy good paying union jobs, they said there was not any real "evidence". So I suppose you can argue there is not enough proof of a grand conspiracy among corporate Dems, corporate Republicans, think tanks, lobbyists and donors to wound then slaughter your postal service.
Does it matter? Behold how these sweethearts work together, the silence between the crocodile tears and solemn concern for a service failing only because of their malicious appointees and illegal plundering and crummy business philosophies. It is all of the same cloth- the shroud over a healthy public commons to be buried alive and mourned with a secret smile as unnecessary, crippling misery spreads over the land. As fake money numbers grow in dark places.
Incrementalism in its best sense was the grudging, tepid giving of something to the public in bits and pieces to keep up the Great infrastructure, to win votes. Not anymore. Incrementalism now is in full reverse to enrich the most undeserving few with a greater enthusiasm inspired by the money gods from Hell. Screw the voters. Screw the world. Fantasy wealth rules!
And since I have been ahead of union leadership on stating suspicions(and the obvious) keeping the egregious over funding of the health benefits(money likely missing in Iraq) and forestalling restoration of full services means they have intended to cripple our union bargaining power in the binding arbitration phase in the national contract now underway. Likewise the lowering of stamp prices in a timely fashion to make the balance sheets look bad for union proposals. Oh yes and the lawsuit by the bulk mailers some of whom are very in bed with these strangely interwoven coincidences that pushed for this rate decrease. Thank you Congress, maybe you have the stomach of brass this time to interfere in our final contract anyway, just as you have in the postal budget against your own legislative rules?
And the perps can still get free mailings at the expense of the average John Q. Public stamp buyer- the sole funder of a once and future Wall Street target. Suckers.
Boycott Staples. Vote for Sanders.
