LOS ANGELES (Sinclair Broadcast Group) A folding buck knife found buried on the perimeter of Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson's former Los Angeles estate years ago is currently being analyzed by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), TMZ reported early Friday.
According to the entertainment news website, it is unclear exactly when a construction worker located the knife, the discovery date "ranging from 'several years ago' to 1998, when the house was demolished."
TMZ reports its law enforcement sources say the worker turned the instrument over to an off-duty LAPD traffic officer working security for a movie shoot across the street, who kept it for years and planned to display the knife at his home in an engraved frame. Per TMZ sources, the now-retired officer shared his plans with a friend in the department's Robbery Homicide Division, who informed his "outraged" superiors. The retired officer followed orders to surrender the knife to police.
The rusted, stained knife is being tested for fingerprints and hair, and will be tested for DNA in the Serology Unit next week, according to TMZ. The site refers to the investigation surrounding the knife as top secret, saying, "It's been logged into the LAPD's computer system outside the official case file to maintain security."

This will go nowhere.
OJ is in the clear.
The real fun would be if it had a victim's blood and someone else's DNA / prints on it, leading to a new suspect in the case.

(16,926 posts)5. Well, there is that, alright
Let's say, given the same chain of custody before the trial, it would not be acceptable.

But I ignored the case then and will continue to do so.

Knife Found on O.J. Simpson Property Inconsistent With Killings: Sources
A knife found a dozen years ago on land where O.J. Simpson once lived is a utility-style knife inconsistent with the 1994 murders of the former football star's wife and her friend, multiple law enforcement sources told NBC News.
Los Angeles police said Friday they were testing the knife, which was recently handed over by a retired LAPD traffic officer, for any possible connection to the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.
Simpson was acquitted in the case, and can't be retried for the killings. The case has remained open.
The retired traffic officer told police he was working on a film shoot 12 years ago when a construction worker gave it to him, explaining that he had found it on the perimeter of the former Simpson property, sources said.
The knife found is a relatively inexpensive, smaller-bladed utility blade typically carried and used by construction workers, gardeners, landscapers or other laborers, the sources said.
The sources would not elaborate on specifics, but they said that the characteristics and condition of the knife were not consistent with the weapon used in the Brown and Goldman murders nor does it appear it was buried for a length of time that would put it in the time frame of the slayings.
