Oakland man convicted of burning Chihuahua alive

Authorities say a 21-year-old Oakland man has been found guilty of killing his puppy by setting it on fire.

The Los Angeles Time reports (http://lat.ms/1RMD5SW ) that Willie Bee Turner was convicted Thursday of animal abuse, maliciously killing an animal and arson.

Prosecutors say Turner set fire to the Chihuahua-mix puppy in January 2015 after getting angry when the dog defecated in his friend's Sacramento apartment.

Turner is accused of pouring beach cleaner on the 8-week-old puppy, putting it into a crate and lighting the animal on fire.

An Oakland friend's service dog is part Chihuahua.

There are lots of people who don't care for Chihuahuas, some because they buy into the idea they are "yappy" dogs. They can be, but not if they are raised correctly.

The U.S. incarcerates far too many people, a disproportionate percentage of them are people of color like this young black man. We need to give this young man a job and an education not prison.

Putting him in prison helps no one, labeling him as a felon for life helps no one.

To be lenient to animal abusers, regardless of color

Studies show that there is a connection between animal abuse and crimes such as rape, sexual homicide, domestic abuse and robbery. Notorious serial killers often have a history of animal abuse. One 21-year study found that 70 percent of animal abusers later went on to commit other crimes. The study also found that 100 percent of individuals who had committed sexual homicide had a history of animal abuse. About two-thirds of animal abusers also assaulted a person.

Another study showed that individuals who abused animals were 500 percent more likely to be arrested for a violent crime and 300 percent more likely to commit crimes related to drugs when compared to individuals who lived in the same area and who were the same age and gender.
