Alabama Republican wants to stop people on food stamps from owning cars — but expects them to get jobs

Alabama Republicans say they want a new bill to drastically limit state welfare programs so that recipients will get jobs — but the bill eliminates the most common means of transportation to and from work.

The bill, created by Republican Sen. Arthur Orr, cuts the time frame for assistance from five years to three. It also creates a new layer of bureaucracy for poor people seeking help, including the requirement that they sign a contract vowing to adhere to the program’s rules. It also disqualifies people from getting food stamps or financial assistance for families with children if the recipients own cars, according to the Montgomery Advertiser.

“We want to get people working back in the workforce and not hanging out for public benefits because they can,” Orr told the paper.

The bill will go to the state Senate after clearing committee 10-3, according to the Advertiser. It limits the programs SNAP, or food stamps, and TANF, or Temporary Aid for Needy Families.

So why doesn't the GOP just come out and say they want all the poor people in the US to die?

Only Native Americans and Blacks and Latinos and Asians are poor. I think that is the correct order.

I wonder if Arthur Orr knows anyone on public assistance? But I'll bet he's a regular down to the Baptist Church, singing about Jesus and listening to Bible stories all the live-long day. None of it, though, ever penetrating that thick-skulled hatrack sitting on top of his shoulders. If you called him cruel, he'd blink with disbelief and say, "Cruel? Me?"

National City Lines were very successful at buying up and destroying the too-efficient, beloved street cars.

.

And replacing them with belchy diesel buses like the ones they had in Montgomery, which Rosa Parks had to ride!

Orr also sits on the board of several non-profit organizations, including the Community Free Clinic which he helped establish to assist the working poor.

I had no health insurance and was making minimum wage plus tips delivering pizza -- supporting a family of four.

Got a horrid ear infection, went to the doctor, found out that without surgery I would go deaf.

Went to the Medcaid office, because I was poor. Because I was unmarried, I was technically single. I was flat out told that owning a car disqualified me from Medicaid, as did being a single male.

The beauty? The same person who told me that government benefits weren't for single males also told me that if I DID go deaf, that is be partially disabled and get a check for life. Sheer lunacy.

Coda: I did go partially deaf, but there's no pay out for partial deafness.

to those who are in need. I think their followers applaud abusive behavior with regard to the poor.
