A big lie (German: große Lüge) is a propaganda technique. The expression was coined by Adolf Hitler, when he dictated his 1925 book Mein Kampf, about the use of a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously."

(4,558 posts)"enact a tax on wallstreet" - even when there's no potential version of congress that will pass that legislation.

"Making tuition free at public colleges and universities throughout America." - again.. not a congress in sight.
"Expanding Social Security by lifting the cap on taxable income above $250,000." - Congress roll call vote? Yeah.
"Guaranteeing healthcare as a right of citizenship by enacting a Medicare for all single-payer healthcare system." - Sure, the same congress that has passed how many bills to kill the ACA act since 2010 is going to pass this
"Breaking up huge financial institutions so that they are no longer too big to fail. " - wow, powerful presidential authority.. or not.
Makes one wonder if there is a single promise being made that actually will have the authority to enact.

Amimnoch
(4,558 posts)And therein is the lie. It he only advocated it, he'd be honest and worth supporting. That's not what he does, he has said he "will", and there you have the lies. Especially since I see no movement from him to get the landscape of congress (other than DWS) changed.
You want to insist on good policies, start by insisting on a good congress. Even the Teaparty was smart enough to figure that one out. As screwed up as they were on the policies themselves, the teabaggers knew that going after congress was the way to go, and unfortunately they did it well. THAT's where this movement needs to go if you want something more than empty promises. Primary the bluedogs with real progressives, and then do what needs to be done to get them to win GE's.
Here's a little hint.. CONGRESS writes, and passes the laws. Not the POTUS, so his promises are lies.
What's ironic, he's in a position right NOW to actually write those laws he's proposing to pass as President. Wonder why he hasn't written them up yet?
Martin Eden
(12,878 posts)Then I'll decide if it's a lie, or just spin on your part.
Here's a little hint ... all POTUS candidates lay out a platform of policies the advocate, which can only be passed by Congress, and doing so does not constitute a LIE.

Tom tells Dick that Harry said he was stupid (the lie).
Dick confronts Harry, who denies it. Dick will never be more than halfway convinced, because of course Harry would deny it. And Dick just can't believe Tom would tell a complete falsehood... there must be at least some truth to it.
Or Dick never confronts Harry... just drops him as a friend.
Tom's mission is accomplished.
I've run into several people like Tom. Until you've been in Harry's shoes, it's hard to believe anyone could be so evil.

Examining the big lie: How the facts of the economic crisis stack up
Barry Ritholtz
The big lie of the financial crisis, of course, is that troubling technique used to try to change the narrative history and shift blame from the bad ideas and terrible policies that created it.
Based on the scores of comments, people are clearly interested in understanding the causes of the economic disaster.
...
A study by the Federal Reserve shows that more than 84 percent of the subprime mortgages in 2006 were issued by private lending institutions. The study found that the government-sponsored enterprises were concerned with the loss of market share to these private lenders Fannie and Freddie were chasing profits, not trying to meet low-income lending goals.

It was on purpose, it was a raid on working Americans by bank$ter/jihadists. Tens of millions are still suffering the effects of this policy-driven theft.
