Mississippi could now legalize discrimination against people who have premarital sex

https://www.rawstory.com/2016/03/mississippi-could-now-legalize-discrimination-against-people-who-have-premarital-sex/

The state legislature in Mississippi has now passed a bill to allow both public employees and private businesses to refuse to take part in gay marriages — but a whole lot of heterosexual people might be surprised at what’s in the written text here....

And from here, so much mischief could be done. Because while the bill specifies numerous social services provided by either state employees or private religious organizations — marriage and adoption, mainly — in all cases an employer or organization is broadly protected for having “a sincerely held religious belief or moral conviction described in Section 2 of this act.”

As written, despite the sponsor’s statement that the bill deals only with same-sex marriage, a government employee could refuse to grant a marriage license to a couple who have had premarital sex — and who knows, they might even be able to ask the question, too.

So why include a section for people who believe that sex is reserved only for marriage? Most likely, that clause might have been intended to relate to other sections of the bill involving adoption and foster care services, as well as fertility services. But the key point here is that as written, any person could be refused a marriage from a government employee on any or all of the bases under Section 2.

Is Sanders so petty that he'd shit on an entire state in a fit of pique? No, because he's neither dismissive nor simplistic.

It would be nice to see his example followed.

Are you trying to claim that because Hillary Clinton won the Democratic primary in Mississippi she had something to do with this bill? Or that the Mississippi DEMOCRATS who voted for her in the primary had anything to do with it?

That is as stupid as saying that since Bernie Sanders won the Utah caucuses he is responsible for whatever dumbass thing the Mormon dominated stated government has done.

Rational people know that in the Republican dominated legislatures of some states Democratic voters don't support the idiotic things that are done no matter which Democratic candidate they support. To claim otherwise is stupid and asinine.

Than I do for those in mostly blue states. When Democrats are a minority they have to fight harder and compromise more even when they don't want to. In states where Democrats are in the majority too many of them seem to spit on Democrats who don't have that advantage.

None of this has anything to do with your comment that "This is a state that Hillary won" - again: What the fuck does that have to do with this perverted legislation?

If it was just an inane non sequitur, fine. If you are somehow blaming Hillary Clinton for what the Mississippi government is trying to do, then explain how Hillary Clinton could possibly be responsible.

In response to your original comment?

Other than making shit up I doubt you have an answer.

And I doubt you actually know any Democrats who live in Republican dominated states - but that is likely more of you making shit up.

Back to your original comment in this thread:

This is a state that Hillary won

mississippi or washington

were are the people that are more rational

This time I quoted your entire original comment in this thread since you seem unable to remember it. So much for who is more rational!

Again I ask: What the fuck does that have to do with this perverted legislation? If you are capable, please answer my question.

Where I live we usually have a choice between a blue dog Democrat or a Tea Party Republican. We HAVE to settle for the Blue Dog - any one more to the left will have no chance at all of getting elected. That does not make Democrats "weak" and it doesn't make our state "bad."

The county where I live is very blue and very liberal - but with gerrymandering by the Republican controlled legislature it has been split between two districts that include some of the most conservative areas of the state. We've done what we can - 2014 we managed to defeat the Tea Party moron that had gotten elected in 2012. While our current Representative is much more conservative than most of the voters here, she reliably votes with the Democrats in Congress and does not hesitate to speak out in favor of Democratic principals.

The League of Women Voters managed to win a law suit forcing adjustments to the state wide districts - but that did not improve the situation in our county. Hopefully in the next few elections we Democrats can get more candidates elected to the state offices and after the census in 2020 we can do more to make the congressional districts fairer and more representative of all the citizens.

NONE of this makes us "weak" - and I suspect that the same holds true for Mississippi. Far too long voter suppression and gerrymandering have affected the elections in too many states, reducing the ability for Democrats to get into office. The gutting of the Voting Rights Act has made it worse for many of those states, but Democrats in those states are still fighting.

That the Democrats are still fighting in the states you claim are not "good" states disproves your claim.

You STILL have not explained how Hillary Clinton winning the primary in Mississippi has ANYTHING to do with the perverse legislation at the head of this thread. So far all you have managed to prove is that your logic is flawed and that you are biased against a entire section of the country.

And it wouldn't just be the Southern states that Democrats would lose.

Did you read the choices? A Blue Dog Democrat is far preferable to a Tea Party Republican. The more Blue Dog Democrats we can get into office, the more chances we will have to get progressive Democrats in.

If we went the "all or nothing" option you seem to advocate we will have all Tea Party assholes in office and no Democrats.

You really have no fucking clue.

You STILL have not explained how Hillary Clinton winning the primary in Mississippi has ANYTHING to do with the perverse legislation at the head of this thread.

Try sticking to the point rather than trying to stick it to someone who does meet your litmus test for purity.

That makes no sense.

Complete sentences make for a much better discussion.

You say you moved away from the South. So many people have said that here on DU. If half of the Democrats they represent had stayed and fought for Democratic candidates we might have more Democrats in office in Southern states.

Instead I count them as people without the guts to fight who just bailed. Then they - the same as most bullies - stand back, sneer and point fingers.

People like you are why I think less of Bernie Sanders. If this is the kind of supporter he attracts I don't want to be in that company. I have a lot of respect for Bernie Sanders himself but his followers - at least here on DU - are not very impressive.

Since you have no intention of ever answering my question - goodbye.

21. Study says those who call out grammatical errors are in fact scientifically 'jerks'
Wed Apr 6, 2016, 12:03 AM

Everybody knows the world's worst people are the ones who never miss an opportunity to explain the difference between who and whom. Those "friends" who are pretending to be policing spelling and grammar for the sake of posterity are probably just flexing for attention, or so it seems to everyone they're interrupting.
As a study from the University of Michigan recently found, those people aren't just annoying, they're also apparently huge jerks.

The study looked at the way both introverted and extroverted people reacted to typos within emails, and deduced that those who were less socially-inclined tended to "judge the person who makes such errors more negatively."

For the experiment, 83 subjects were asked to peruse email responses for a roommate ad. Some contained no errors, but others had been altered to include simple common errors. For example, in some, "about" might have been written "abuot," and in other instances, "their" and "there," or "you're" and "your" might have been swapped incorrectly.

After subjects had looked over the emails, they were questioned first as to whether or not they noticed the emails, and if they had responded "Yes," they were asked to expand upon their answer.

As researchers found, those were surveyed to be "less agreeable" were most bothered by the errors, while those who surveyed as having a "more agreeable" personality tended to overlook typos.

"Agreeability was the only personality trait to have a main effect on the Housemate Scale," the study read. "Participants who tested as more agreeable on the BFI tended to rate the paragraphs more positively overall than participants who tested as less agreeable."
