Russia Mocks U.S. Reaction After Jets Buzz Navy Destroyer

Russian officials on Thursday mocked the United States’ reaction after officials expressed outrage that Russian war jets provocatively buzzed a Navy destroyer in the Baltic Sea.

"To be honest, we don't understand such a painful reaction from our American colleagues," said Russian Ministry of Defense spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov in a statement.

Konashenkov said his country’s SU-24 jets, which Navy officials said flew so low and close to the USS Donald Cook this week that it created a wake in the water, said the aircraft were “compliant to all safety regulations" and that all of the country’s military flights are "conducted in strict compliance to the international rules of airspace management over neutral waters."

U.S. officials, however, disagree. They called the flybys unsafe, unprofessional and “dangerously close”.

“These actions have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions between countries and could result in a miscalculation or accident that could cause serious injury or death,” Navy officials said in a statement.

Senator John McCain called it "Yet another unacceptable provocation," by the Russians.
