A gay waitress in North Carolina shared a bill revealing what she described as a hateful message a group of diners recently left her instead of a tip.
....
Judd posted a picture online of the bill from the groups visit to her Charlotte restaurant on Tuesday. The photo shows an abbreviation for the Old Testament verse Leviticus 20:13 listed under tip. It states, If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
The bottom of the bill also shows the message, Praying for you written in under the diners signature. She told WBTV that the group was very rude to her during their visit.
Judd, who has joined in rallies criticizing the passage of HB2 which bans trans residents from using restrooms according to their gender identity responded by writing, I dont care what anyone says, this is the most disrespectful thing you can do, she wrote about the incident on Facebook. Dont pray for me darling, I have everything I could possibly want and need in my life.

That kind of arrogant self-righteousness is profoundly disturbing. Historical Jesus would not approve.

(5,842 posts)Given that the track record of these "tip" stories is heavily weighted towards "fake" I would definitely think more info is in order before taking a stand one way or another on the truth of this incident.

(53,962 posts)They posted this before it ever hit the 'airwaves.' As I see it, she was posting it to Facebook as a " " moment that GLBT people can relate to. While I can't be sure, I am guessing they thought she "looked like a lesbian." Some people judge others by their look and assume, sometimes correctly, sometimes not. Also, there are certain places where many members of the same group/church attend, so "word" spreads about certain servers.
When we first moved back to OK from NOLA, my (now) husband, whom you met, was at work and someone asked if his "wife" was coming to a group dinner. You know me, certainly not the "little lady" type (LOL!), and he responded with, "my partner will be there." The woman who asked was embarrassed, and explained she didn't know and she was gay-supportive (she is). But, it spread quickly and some attitudes changed toward him; nothing too serious, cuz, well, I am not in jail!
I don't know why they "knew" or if they just assumed. But, this type of crap does happen more than most people know. I think I actually have a "ten dollar bill" from a friend of mine who got it as a tip. It isn't a real $10 bill, it is made to look like one, but contains Bible messages, which are left in lieu of a tip. Other people certainly got them, but GLBT wait staff got more than their fair share.
I know people look at things like this with a cautious eye; can't say I blame them, but for every false claim, there are hundreds, may be more, where they aren't reported, especially when the target is a LGBT person.
When I was in SC, I went to a bar on a regular basis, but there was a new bartender, so he knew I could open a tab, but didn't know my name. The name on the tab...Fag. I laughed it off at the time, but it was upsetting. I will say, he never forgot my name after that!

(53,962 posts)You were born that way!
I just figured with so many asking that question, I would communicate my thoughts to someone I know to be an actual ally to the GLBT community. You are more aware then most what GLBT people face, even when we don't speak out about it. However, there are still so many who don't realize the day to day issues we face and concerns we have because our sexual orientation/gender identification is often taken for granted.
From my estimation, there are many who don't realize, maybe don't care, there are a number of bills like the ones in NC and MS, which are being considered right now, never mind the day to day shit some of us face (or less than day to day, but every now and again get slapped on our asses when we are reminded we aren't "normal" .
My hubby is doing fine, he's pretty much a duck...water off his back. LOL!

(961 posts)Someone asked how the costumers knew she was gay. They may not know. They may have assumed by the severs appearance or what ever criteria they use to determine if a person is gay or not.
Or they could have asked about her husband and she responded about her wife? That is one of the simple freedoms we are fighting for. When someone asks us about our families and we respond with the truth, every LBGT person runs the risk of a response like this or worse.
I worked in Florida and Virginia during the 1980sand 1990s as an open and expressive gay man. The overt and hidden hatred I dealt with could be overwhelming.
And I was privileged. If I choose to, I could look, act and sound as straight as any heterosexual. Unlike my minority coworkers who were facing similar hatred based on skin color or country of origin, I had the luxury of hiding in plain sight when I wanted. It is amazing the crap people will say when they think you think "just like them".

(29,414 posts)I'm just an average hetero guy and haven't worked in the service industry. Yet I know for a fact from just working in offices that the most common question from evangelical types is "Are you married?" The next most-common one is "Do you have children?"
I'm sure most of y'all know just how bristly they get when you answer "No" to either question (or worse, to both of them.) All it takes is to offer more information than simply 'no' for them to start making assumptions, usually that one is gay. They are an extremely judgmental crowd. And most religious people I know aren't like that at all.
Scruffy Rumbler
(961 posts)What religion are you? If I did not mention my religion, then neither should you.
My mother taught me that her relationship with Jesus was similar to her sex life; no one's business but her own. She pretty much came out in 1976 to her family of 7 kids!
She maintained her faith in Jesus, the man and the teachings of Peace and tolerance, not the one of fire and brim stone. She thought a person should do right by their fellow humans whether anyone was there to see your actions or not.
"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you" was her living motto and example she set by her actions, not her words. When we prayed it was about protection and blessing, not changing people!
Thanks for getting "it"!

But, religious hypocrisy aside, letting someone do work for you and then not paying them, that is just a straight up asshole. Perhaps they justify that because of all the slavery in the bible.

(5,842 posts)Unless one of the customers personally knew the waitress, the waitress was wearing something advertising a cause that would lead one to make assumptions about her sexuality or she volunteered her sexuality at some point during her service to that table what would lead them to even reach a conclusion of that type.

(50,566 posts)Of course I've been around atheists. Most of my family members are atheists. Many of my friends are atheists or agnostics. They don't say everything would be "perfect" if religion would disappear.
Even if they did make that observation -- which they don't -- that doesn't even apply to my point that atheists don't take aggressive actions like some/many Christians do in this country. We're not the ones bombing clinics, accosting people on the street telling them to believe or burn, leaving no tips in judgment of someone's homosexuality or perceived homosexuality, putting Dawkins books in hotel rooms, and passing "atheist freedom" laws to deprive others of the rights to use bathrooms and such. That would be the religious nuts doing those things.

(1,000 posts)There's no Biblical support for putting lesbians to death, only gay men.
Read it - the Biblical laws on sexual behavior are exclusively directed towards men. Women are not addressed, it is assumed in the text that they have no independent agency.
