Donald Trumps presidential campaign all but threw in the towel in Wyoming, ahead of Saturdays Republican convention. Senator Ted Cruz, Trumps closest challenger for the presidential nomination, was expected to sweep the delegates on offer.
Trumps campaign made a conscious decision not to commit resources to the state, according to Alan Cobb, a senior adviser. Trump picked only one delegate in last months Wyoming county conventions while Cruz scored nine. There are 14 more delegates at stake this weekend, as 475 party activists gather.
Cruz spoke at the convention on Saturday, capping a months-long effort to organize support in the state. Trump had planned to send former Alaska governor Sarah Palin but she canceled at the last minute.
Cruz spoke about local issues in the largest coal-producing state, discussing the Democratic attack on fossil fuels and saying President Obama had tried to put the coal industry out of business through government regulations targeting air pollution.
