Marijuana question heading to ballot

The House and Senate “indefinitely postponed” action Friday on a proposal to legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Maine, meaning the question will now appear on the November state ballot.

Rep. Diane Russell, a Democrat from Portland who has been a leading advocate for legalization and who sponsored many marijuana legalization bills that failed in past legislatures, loudly made a motion that effectively let the question go to the ballot.

The citizens’ initiative seemed doomed earlier this year, when Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap ruled that petitioners had not submitted enough valid signatures to qualify the question for the ballot.

But a judge overturned the chief reason for Dunlap’s objections and he issued a revised decision earlier this week that cleared the way for ballot placement.
