Haven't seen anything in GD Greatest Threads in forever. Stuck in some FireLookout without internet access?

(9,256 posts)The last two years he's been in the Fire Lookout above Tucson, for all of southeastern AZ.
We messaged last year because there was a fire on Mt Lemmon in April and I wondered if he was around. He was. I don't know about this year. I hope he's alright and checks in soon.

(149,678 posts)He's one of the DU long-timers. He and I had a few great discussions about the nature of being a veteran. I miss just seeing him around and being able to say 'Hi'.

(34,582 posts)I reconnected with my best friend in high school. He occasionally posted right wing BS, which I ignored. Then, the other day, he posted some crap about confederate veterans. I countered back that those veterans fought for the cause of slavery. I was called a libtard, and told how libtards are trying to re-write history. "The war was about state rights". I knew arguing with Limbaugh listeners was a losing battle- they just will not accept facts. I lost what I thought was a friend, which I have precious few of. But that's ok- I don't want friend who defend the confederacy. Oh, for the record, we grew up in Ohio (of course, he didn't get there until his family moved from Germany when he was 10).

(6,117 posts)All the news about the Canadian blaze probably triggered the memory.
Yes, please let him know he is missed.

(25,400 posts)I guess it HAS been a while. Sorry for the absence. But I am back in Arizona for my eighth fire season in a fire lookout. I just renewed my DU password and my star status to kill the ads.
I do have internet up here. Very good internet, but expensive. So I try to wait until I am in a hotel in Tucson to upload photos (to save bandwidth charges). Hope to start posting some photos here again soon.
Speaking of photos, I have two gallery shows in progress back east. The biggest (with 62 works displayed) is in the Wren House, at the South Carolina Botanical Garden, on the campus of Clemson University. That show will hang until after fire season, probably September. Maybe I can post the images from that show here on DU, a few at a time.
On the fire front, we have a 3400 acre wildfire - the "Cumero Fire" - burning in grass and brush about 7 miles SW of Arivaca, AZ, and about 4.5 miles north of the border with Mexico. Sure will be glad when Trump gets that wall built!
On the ham radio often as K9STR. Mainly PSK-31 on 10 & 20 meters. But I monitor 2-meter simplex (146.52), per the wilderness protocol. I have been invited to lecture at the Radio Society of Tucson at one of their monthly meetings.
The documentary I did with Arizona Public Media for national PBS (I did most of the photography, much of the video, and all of the on-camera work) won a Rocky Mountain Region Emmy last October. Whoooo hoooo! Type "Lemmon Rock Lookout" into either the AZPM or YouTube search engines to watch it.
Thank my dear friend California Peggy for alerting me to this post. She is a DU treasure, and a very special person to me.
Ciao for now ..

(9,256 posts)I love that documentary you did! Incredible views and photography of AZ and fascinating look into the work and life at a Fire Lookout Station. I'll have to watch it again one of these days. The storms were cool.
So glad you're back online.
