Criminalising abortion does not cut number of terminations, says study
One in four pregnancies are terminated, with rates falling in developed countries but staying steady in developing nations

A woman adds a clothes hanger, symbolising an illegal abortion, to a tree branch in front of Polands parliament after a march in April opposing a possible tightening of abortion laws.
One in four pregnancies ends in abortion worldwide - about 56m a year - according to new global data which shows that criminalising abortion does not make it any less frequent.
New figures from the US-based Guttmacher Institute and the World Health Organisation (WHO) show the abortion rate in developed countries has declined significantly over the past couple of decades but has remained steady in developing countries, reflecting an unmet need for contraception.
In developed countries, the continued fall in abortion rates is largely due to increased use of modern contraception that has given women greater control over the timing and number of children they want, said Dr Gilda Sedgh from the institutes New York office.
In developing countries, however, family planning services do not seem to be keeping up with the increasing desire for smaller families. More than 80% of unintended pregnancies are experienced by women with an unmet need for modern methods of contraception, and many unwanted pregnancies end in abortion.
The paper published in the Lancet medical journal shows the annual number of abortions dropped from about 12m a year in 1990-94 to 7m in 2010-14 in developed countries. In the developing world, the numbers rose from 39m to 50m a year in the same time period.

(4,113 posts)Yvette Herrell, State Rep in New Mexico supported HB 206 that would have allowed up to 3 yrs in prison for a woman and the abortion provider for any woman who had been raped, got pregnant and went for an abortion...on basis it would have been attempt to destroy the evidence.

(4,113 posts)We seem to be going a bit more slowly than I'd wished! I can't wait to be told I'm sharing, posting too much about my candidacy!
I just thought that waiting until one could use a credit card was the way to go....and life keeps putting up detours and minor road blocks...but we are getting there!
Thank you for your encouragement. I will need lots of DU love because I face fierce opposition with the incumbent being an ALEC Star and being groomed for US Congress when our TeaParty US Congressman Steve Pearce steps down within months of his and her being elected. It is ugly around here with Trump and TeaParty supporters.

(4,113 posts)I think she makes it clear in the rest of her remarks in this newspaper article what the bill was REALLY about...what do you think? How would you explain/follow this up?
"...Herrell talked about the fire storm over Carlsbad's' Republican Rep. Cathrynn Brown's proposed House Bill 206.
An attorney, Brown has stated in several articles that the bill was poorly written.
The bill read: "Tampering with evidence shall include procuring or facilitating an abortion, or compelling or coercing another to obtain an abortion, of a fetus that is the result of criminal sexual penetration or incest with the intent to destroy evidence of the crime."
Herrell said she believed the bill was against the perpetrator and not against the woman.
"I co-sponsored the bill," she said. "I had a lot of Alamogordo people tell me that they will run against me and will not have my back. If a woman becomes pregnant through rape or incest and she wants to carry this baby to full term, then that's fine. There was nothing against the woman. It was only against the perpetrator if the woman was coerced or forced to have an abortion. I just wanted to clear that up."
Herrell said she was proud that she co-sponsored the bill.
"I think that if it's wrong for me to stand up for a Christian House member in something that we believe in to protect the unborn, then I don't want to be a state representative in Santa Fe," she said. "I believe in my heart, it was the right bill to sign. I hate what happened to Cathrynn. It stayed in committee. We couldn't do anything with it because of too much brouhaha and bad press about it." ....."

(113,323 posts)all the rationalizations and justifications that they want for that insane bill, but only someone who lacks two arcing brain cells will believe their crap.
and the very fact that she had to include "christian" house member would have told us everything, even if we did not already understand. soooo, if we think that your fundy beliefs have no place in the state house, you don't want to be there?? FINE. we are a SECULAR nation, you twit.
