Mail carriers' food drive is TODAY!!!!

This food drive is a major help to your local food bank/pantry. All you need to do is place some nonperishables into a bag and leave it out at your mailbox. The wonderful postal carrier who serves you will do the rest. Please donate!

And while I'm on the subject, I have been leaving small boxes of chocolates in the mailbox every year just before Christmas. When I get a package delivered to the door, the postman wishes me a great day very warmly. I have no idea whether the chocolate contributes to his attitude, but it's always a pleasant encounter.

As usual, it's the only one out on the cul-de-sac. I wish I could get people to see just how important this is, especially heading into summer.

Years ago I volunteered at a food pantry and one thing that will always stay with me was the day when we had a higher number of people than usual show up one summer day. By the end of the morning we were just about out of food and we were actually putting handfuls of soy sauce packs in grocery bags. I felt absolutely horrible.

Hunger is year-round, not just during the holidays. I salute the postal service for doing this every year at this time.

if you do, knock on their door and tell them about the drive.

About 10 years ago, my nephews, brothers knew the Scouting Drive was coming up. They were 15 and 11. They always did odd jobs and between them they had about $25. They asked me to take them to Aldis, where they bought soup, canned vegetables, rice, pasta other assorted dry items and 2 cases of water, they gave it all to the Boy Scouts.

Neither of them were ever involved in the Scouting programs.

It seems that mail carriers, being out in the community so much, noticed that too many mothers were having a hard time being able to feed their children. So they decided to have a food drive and scheduled it for the second Saturday in May to coincide with Mother's Day.

food collection before because I live in an apt. building. To tell the truth, I'm often concerned that someone will steal the donation if it's unattended. This time I'm donating and attaching the bag to my mailbox with a note. The mail carrier will be here within a few hours and the odds of anyone entering the mailroom before then are slim. Plus if anyone not actually needy takes my donation, it's their bad karma, not mine.

I tried to put one bag in my mailbox and the (plastic) mail box pole tried to buckle. Sigh.

So I doubled bagged the goods, sat them on the ground in front of the mail box and placed signs on either side of the box saying "Food Drive Bags" with a hand pointing toward the ground.

It's freakin' hot out there and now I'm exhausted.

I thought that it was impossible to destroy energy. What I want to know is what ever happened to the energy of my youth? Where has it gone?

my 86 year old mother & 63 year old brother are both retired from the Post Office. I know this drive every year brings a smile to my mom's lips.

A couple of years ago we were going to be out of town the weekend of the drive. We left a bag with our neighbors down the hall to leave in the mailroom for us.

I sent an email to the Regional Food Bank telling them what happened and that I wonder how much food they lost out of because of postal carriers who failed to live up to their commitments to this event. I can tell you that I won't particiapte again. I would rather focus on animal related issues.

I put mine out a day or two early, that way she doesn't have to carry all those cans in one day. :0)

Each time I go shopping I buy one or two canned items of high protein food that I don't eat (very often chili or canned meat). That is my donation pile. In a pinch (natural disaster--sudden unemployment) they could be my emergency food but so far no disasters and I just keep cycling the food out through the mail carrier and Cub Scout food drives. But that way I always have more nutritious food to give out. Otherwise all they would get is canned pineapple and green beans....pretty much the only canned food I buy.
