"SNIP..............
Throughout the pre-primary and primary phases of the GOP presidential-nominating process, Trump had a bunch of advantages he will soon lose. He was a novice pol who was regularly defying expectations amidst almost universal predictions of failure. He was the dominant media object in a very crowded field of opponents. He had the strategic flexibility associated with doing relatively well in every region of the country and among every major category of Republican voter. He was independent of any sizable bloc of endorsers, donors, or surrogates, operating from his own tight-knit personal army. He was functioning within a Republican Party dominated by the older white voters that were his principal base, and where the minority voters he so deeply offends were rare and insignificant presences.
Now he is about to become the Titular Head of the Republican Party, with presumed responsibility for a big, divided and (at the moment) fearful coalition of down-ballot candidates and allied constituency and interest groups. Even if he minimizes the value of party support, he'll have to deal with constant advice and admonitions from party officials, many of whom not-so-secretly would prefer that he lose and leave them to inherit the GOP. He's already beginning to hustle money to finance his campaign.
Given the binary nature of general elections, he can no longer count on the kind of huge margins in media coverage he enjoyed when it was 16 Lilliputians trying to overcome the orange-haired Gulliver. For that matter, in Hillary Clinton he will finally face an opponent as well known as he is. He will not be able to run a national campaign that divides and conquers a scattered and regionally dependent opposition. He'll be fighting Clinton one-on-one in the same fixed set of battlefield states. Instead of dealing with an electorate where he can find support all across demographic groups, Trump will be beginning in a deep, deep hole with African-Americans, Latinos, and professional women, with sure support only from groups like non-college-educated conservative white men, which any Republican can and must carry by huge margins.
At key moments in the campaign like the debates, Trump will no longer be addressing an audience that inherently hates "political correctness" and thus has a high tolerance for borderline racist and sexist rhetoric and insult-comedy. And Clinton and her allies will be able deploy their massive oppo-research files on Trump in a consistent, relentless manner very much unlike the occasional, clumsy, and halfhearted Trump-bashing undertaken by his primary opponents and the mainstream media. After all, it's not like Democrats need to treat him with kid gloves because they'll need to appeal to his core supporters down the road.

(28,552 posts)... any politician accountable and hasn't for a very long time.
It wouldn't matter if they did, the electorate has already proven they don't care about any of the "years ago he said" or "not exactly factual" type gotchas, folks have given up on the fourth estate and rightly so.

(15,240 posts)There is 30 years of opposition research on Hillary Clinton. Both political parties will run the least liked candidates in American history. Right now it sucks to be an American voter.

(21,506 posts)It has all been touted out before. None of it new.
Trump on the other hand has made it easy. Because he is who he is and has been for the same 30 years and very little of it has been brought up before. Yet he has been quite public throughout those same 30 years. Reams of trump being trump and it is about to all come back to haunt him.
The only reason people didn't think Trump would make it this far is because they didn't understand how terribly flawed the republican party is. How years of dog whistles have taken their toll on a party whose base thinks xenophobia is perfectly natural, how they have learned to hate. It should have been obvious with the tea party take over but they and many others refused to believe it. The tea party isn't racist...
So Trump exposed what many knew all along. The republican party has been relying on racism for votes for a long time. Something they have been accused of and denied but it has been shown with Trump how pervasive it is.
It may be a wake up call for the Republican party but his win is not really surprising in the context of the Republican party. It was "Baked in" As Lindsay Graham of all people put it.
That 30 years of Opo reearch has taken its toll on Hillary to be sure but it has also done something else it has made her numbers stable. If you look at this primary and the last one her negative/positive remains almost constant throughout. Trump has no such stability to look forward to.
Going forward to win the GE Trump will have to pull off a herculean task and he will have to do it in the face of a near constant stream of advertisements full of footage of him acting like an ass.
In addition, most feel Sanders (68 percent), Clinton (62 percent), and Cruz (61 percent) have the temperament to serve, while most think Trump does not (65 percent).
Clintons advantages over Trump on knowledge and temperament are striking, comments Democratic pollster Chris Anderson, who conducts the Fox News Poll with Republican pollster Daron Shaw. That could provide a very good foundation for a general election campaign.
Those numbers are devastating for Trump and will be difficult if not impossible for him to turn around in the face of footage of him treating women like objects and disparaging minorities and all of the rest of his repulsive behavior. Yes a portion of the republican base will revel in it. That portion though large enough inside the republican party to get him through a divided primary, is not nearly large enough to carry a general. To win that he will need a lot of help.
The republican party already had a disadvantage demographically that has been growing and continues to grow mostly because of their past penchant for dog whistle politics. Trump is not doing anything to help that he is almost purposefully making it worse.
Yea it works in a party chock full of bigoted assholes but that is not the general election.

(10,597 posts)... what to expect out of Trump, except the same old song he's given everyone up till now. Can you imagine Trump with in a serious, pondering mood when the Press asks their questions? Can you imagine Trump actually appearing to think? Trump without that obnoxious smirky sneer on his pace? Trump actually being serious about anything? I say he will never make it that far. Trump is NOT going to be our next President.

(19,565 posts)Even if he loses it's still a big accomplishment. HUGE even. 😣
Seriously, better men than him have tried and failed at this. He's been elevated to far better company than he deserves, or previously shared.
Meanwhile, he's tried and failed at so many ventures, of which this is really just one more for him. I don't think he's going to do anything other than come out of this as a winner. He's expanded his bran, and he may actually be president.
Imagine the clout the Trump brand will have if he wins? Or, even if he fails for that matter.
That's the end game here. Trump is gonna win big either way. In many ways, he already has.

(21,506 posts)One of his head staffers came out and admitted it. He got in this for the publicity and found a welcoming bunch of Xenophobes inside the republican party. Nothing really huge about what he did. The Republican party was ripe for this.

(19,565 posts)He's in it for the publicity at first, which was my first impression, and then he got actual leverage within the broken Republican Party, and ran with it.
Now he has an actual chance at being POTUS. Which is terrifying, needless to say.

(16,646 posts)I've literally lived through this. The GOP voters will elect a chimp if it has an "R" after it's name. I've watched them vote this decades. My fear is that the "Reagan democrats" will leave us and vote for Trump. The whole DLC approach will end up costing us this election cycle.
