Padres representatives aggressively sought to prevent singers from performing the National Anthem unless they purchased a ticket to the game -- even if they did not plan to stay for the game -- which was not part of any previous discussion or written or verbal agreement...The demand eventually was rescinded..."

I'm glad it occurred to them to fire someone (a SUB-contractor is in charge of their public address system -- really?) But I hope the MLB front office conducts an investigation of its own. The Padres' "internal" investigation was much too swift to have been "thorough." But if it was actually an unintentional error, correcting it is as simple as rescheduling the choir as soon as possible.

The choir is excellent. How hard would it have been to stop the first tape and start a second one and have the men sing? A sad loss for the Padres.

Perhaps it was unintentional, or perhaps it was simply a way to "put us in our place". I hate to break out the rainbow tinfoil, but shit like this has happened before.

(44,576 posts)6. UPDATE: MLB front office to investigate
ESPN: Major League Baseball is investigating the controversy surrounding the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus' appearance at a San Diego Padres game..."We are pleased that Major League Baseball is going to look into this issue and we will cooperate fully," Padres president Mike Dee said... "Based on our internal investigation, and our decisive actions yesterday, we are eager for all the facts surrounding this unfortunate incident to come forward..." The Padres...senior director of game-day presentation had been involved in a(n)...accident...and was not at Saturday's game.
MLB spokesman Pat Courtney (said) the league will try to find out if there was intent on the part of any person associated with the club when the recording was played on Pride Night at Petco Park...Billy Bean, MLB's vice president of social responsibility and inclusion, said..."I want to convey that my former team, the San Diego Padres, has supported our inclusion message at MLB without hesitation...I can assure you that they have made every effort to include the LGBT community and champion equality in MLB..." Bean came out as gay in 1999, four years after his final season as an MLB player. He was hired by MLB as a consultant in 2014 and promoted to his current position earlier this year.
The Padres tweeted Sunday that the chorus has been invited back to Petco Park to sing the national anthem.

"Intent on the part of any person associated with the club?" Does that mean the people associated with the club who merely hired contractors are already off the hook? If you were HIRED by the club -- permanently or temporarily -- you ARE connected with the club!

(44,576 posts)7. MLB satisfied with Padres' response to chorus mishap
Major League Baseball completed its investigation into the Padres' handling of the national anthem Saturday night at Petco Park, concluding "that Saturday's regrettable situation was a product of human error."
As a result of the findings, Padres president Mike Dee announced that the club had reinstated Art Romero, known as DJ ArtForm, whose mishap led to a woman's voice being played over the speaker system instead of the San Diego Gay Men's Chorus.
...Both investigations concluded that the incident was simply a technical mistake...(T)he wrong music had been queued up, and Romero made the decision to continue playing the recorded version of the anthem, instead of stopping it...

Romero saw one hundred men on the field, heard a woman singing, and decided nothing was wrong? If they were supposed to sing, why did he have to play the recording in the first place? Did the chorus provide the Padres with a recording that was supposed to be played? And why would you rehire someone who acted so incompetently?

... who are we to complain.
I hope the Chorus gets another chance at this. I'd bet they would do a fine job.
