(17,301 posts)I heard an interview with him on a liberal radio show about 5 years ago that I will never forget (because I wrote the talk show host complaining about his depiction of American workers.)
and he explained, much like Trump, how he liked illegal immigrants because they were such hard workers who worked for less. He said American workers were lazy and expected too much for their work. You know like time off to go to college and stuff. No kidding he objected to American workers for wanting an education and decent pay.

(31,392 posts)I actually came to verbal blows with a former colleague and friend on fb about it. Ended up unfriending her. Turns out
she was a closet right-winger who moved more to the right after she retired and moved from California to Idaho.
Should have been a clue when I saw where she chose to move!
I did have to laugh a year or so later when Paula Deen admitted she had developed Type 2 diabetes as a result
of her "lifestyle" of cooking with so much butter and sugar over the years.

(581 posts)I watch Bourdain shows often, finding them interesting. I wish I had been there with them. Of course speaking about foods and local customs.

(32,025 posts)I have been to Vietnam a few times and food is unbelievably cheap there.
Plucketeer
(12,882 posts)everything has to be cheap. Possibly - if Obama gets his way with the TPP - we'll ALL get a cheap meal - out of necessity.
PBass
(1,537 posts)I spent time in Vietnam last year. Everything is much, much cheaper there.
But don't let the facts interfere with taking a dig at Obama.
Plucketeer
(12,882 posts)See, it's been a few years since I was there. I'm sure all those regular folk make salaries equivalent to what U.S. workers make - which DOES mean they're really getting some super deals on stuff. Yassir!
And you were there recently! Maybe you got to see some of those fine facilities where my denim shorts are sewn up? I pay about $20 bucks for a pair here. And I wonder as to just how much some lucky person in Vietnam got paid to stitch them up? Prolly make U.S. workers jealous, no?
<- I use this 'cause'n I doubt you could recognize it otherwise.

(27,813 posts)One thing I think he's dead wrong about though, is garlic presses. I make garlic butter a lot, and I like squeezing the juice out and getting the garlic itself down to a pasty quality that really works in garlic butter. I don't know why he's so against them.
haele
(12,660 posts)They just clutter the counter-top. Bourdain's celebrity chef peers Alton Brown and Mario Battali have similar dislikes of single-function kitchen tools.
Their argument against a garlic press would be if you've got a fresh garlic clove, why use a garlic press when you can use the side of your knife just as well?
Therein lies the problem - grocery stores do not provide fresh garlic the way a 4 or 5 star restaurant will be able to get. So while they can get the same buttery, paste-like consistency by just two quick slices to get the skin off and smearing across the garlic segment with a good hefty chef's knife or chopper, you would need a garlic press, unless you were lucky to pick up a fresh garlic clove at a farmer's market.

(27,813 posts)I can get the smeary stuff with a knife, but not that extra juice effect. I still think he's wrong!
