What gets The Mouth hot and bothered.
Trump's real estate empire and casinos have mob roots.
By Steven Rosenfeld / AlterNet May 23, 2016
The first decades of Donald Trumps career as a New York City builder and Atlantic City casino magnate are filled with lasting and documented ties to organized crimeincluding mobsters who went to federal prison, according to a recent series of detailed investigative reports.
No other candidate for the White House this year has anything close to Trumps record of repeated social and business dealings with mobsters, swindlers, and other crooks, wrote David Cay Johnston for Politico.com. In all, Ive covered Donald Trump off and on for 27 years, and in that time Ive encountered multiple threads linking Trump to organized crime.
Well, to be a developer in New York City, to be fair, you had to, in those daysthis is talking about the late 70s and 1980s, early 90syou had to brush up against the mob, Tom Robbins, who covered organized crime, labor and politics for decades for The New York Daily News and Village Voice, told Democracy Now, when talking about his report for TheMarshallProject.org. They were a force both on the employer side and particularly on the union side. But despite that problem, Don Trump seemed to keep running into them over and over again. They bought apartments in his Trump Tower, in Trump Plaza. You know, they kept showing up as people that he was carousing with.
Robbins, who called Trump, the slickest con-man out of New York City, said the Republicans had no idea who their presidential nominee was. But as he reported for the Marshall Project, which covers criminal justice issues, and Johnston, a Pulitzer Prize winning business reporter wrote for politico.com, Trump knew he wanted to make a fortune soon after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1968 and found a role model in one of the sleaziest lawyers in AmericaRoy Cohn. In the 1950s, Cohn helped Wisconsin Republican Sen. Joseph McCarthy persecute Hollywood figures for allegedly supporting Communism. Years later when Trump met Cohn, he had moved to New York City and was advising the citys leading organized crime figures.
Trumps mentor on issues of politics and business was Roy Cohn, a lawyer whose other clients included a passel of mobsters, among them the bosses of the Genovese and Gambino crime families, wrote Robbins. Cohn operated out of a townhouse on East 68th Street where clients Anthony Fat Tony Salerno and Paul Big Paul Castellano were regular visitors. Besides getting advice on their legal problems, as a former secretary later recalled to [Village Voice reporter] Wayne Barrett in his 1992 book, Trump: The Deals and the Downfall, the visits by the mob titans to their lawyer's office allowed them to talk shop without having to worry about FBI bugs. Cohn told a reporter that Trump called him fifteen to twenty times a day, asking whats the status of this, whats the status of that, according to Barretts book.

I'm certain that Secretary Clinton's opposition research includes all that's in the article and more. I hope that they have so much that they have to be careful how they dole it out. Too much too fast and it'll become a blur. If they can illustrate for the American voters just who Donald Trump really is, the election won't be close.

(19,326 posts)Of course I already knew Trump was a mobster, but it's one thing to know
that and another to have all the gory details ln living color.
Too bad all we have to run against The Donald is someone who is herself under an
extensive and protracted FBI investigation, and who is far from being baggage-free.

light of today's Inspector General report taking Hillary to the woodshed over her

(23,576 posts)It's a modern Manchurian Candidate. Let's say that Donald Trump has deep and ongoing ties to organized crime. With their help and the Republican base, Mr. Trump wins the election. As president, wouldn't he be able to pardon or otherwise absolve his underworld cronies of their crimes?

Trump, The Mob & Organized Crime
http://www.helpfreetheearth.com
August 2015
While Donald Trump was building his eponymous empire of hotels, casinos, and high rises in the early 1980s in New York City and Atlantic City, the construction industry was firmly under the thumb of the mafia. In both places there are literally concrete connections between La Cosa Nostra and Trumps lavish projects.
Now that he tops the polls for U.S. President, it's time to focus on his ties to the mob. In the book, Trump, The Deals and the Downfall, author Wayne Barrett lays out Trump's dealings and associations...like Salvatore Testa, a Philadelphia mafia boss and son of Philip Chicken Man Testa, Scarfo and Anthony Fat Tony Salerno, the boss of the Genovese crime family.
Trump bought a piece of land for $1 million from the son of Philadelphias former mafia Don, and used it to launch a gambling empire.
Another former business associate of Mr Trump, Felix Sater is an ex-convict who had gone to prison for stabbing a man in the face with the snapped-off stem of a cocktail glass. Out of prison, Mr Sater went on to take part in a $40m (£27m) stock market scam in the 1990s involving four mafia families. Mr Sater then moved into property development, which is how he came into contact with Mr Trump. Despite Saters previous mafia links becoming public, Mr Trump remained involved with him in a property deal in Florida for another year.
Could this myriad of associations, points of contact, and shared affiliations with known mobsters just be the price of doing business in that business at that time? Sure. And if Trump were just a private citizen, businessman, and reality TV star, he would be under no obligation to explain any of this. But he isnt. He is the frontrunner for the Republican nomination for president of the United States.
Its time to stop treating Trump as a sideshow. He is being treated with kid gloves because nobody thinks he can win. Everybody is simply waiting for him to implode under the pressure of his own enormous ego and unfiltered motor mouth. But rather than plunging his run into chaos, his racist ramblings about immigrants and undignified digs at John McCains military service have excited some supporters. They think he speaks truth to power. They think he is the only honest man in politics. And no degree of exasperation from level headed news people and party officials seems to tamp his populist surge.

PS: Thank you for grokking, Jeffersons Ghost! It really says something about our age when gangsters who can afford to get away with lying America into endless wars for profit now have to make way for lower class of gangster who make money from gambling and construction. What is this world turning to?

THE ORIGINS OF THE OVERCLASS
by Steve Kangas
The wealthy have always used many methods to accumulate wealth, but it was not until the mid-1970s that these methods coalesced into a superbly organized, cohesive and efficient machine. After 1975, it became greater than the sum of its parts, a smooth flowing organization of advocacy groups, lobbyists, think tanks, conservative foundations, and PR firms that hurtled the richest 1 percent into the stratosphere.
The origins of this machine, interestingly enough, can be traced back to the CIA. This is not to say the machine is a formal CIA operation, complete with code name and signed documents. (Although such evidence may yet surface and previously unthinkable domestic operations such as MK-ULTRA, CHAOS and MOCKINGBIRD show this to be a distinct possibility.) But what we do know already indicts the CIA strongly enough. Its principle creators were Irving Kristol, Paul Weyrich, William Simon, Richard Mellon Scaife, Frank Shakespeare, William F. Buckley, Jr., the Rockefeller family, and more. Almost all the machine's creators had CIA backgrounds.
SNIP...
How did this alliance start? The CIA has always recruited the nations elite: millionaire businessmen, Wall Street brokers, members of the national news media, and Ivy League scholars. During World War II, General "Wild Bill" Donovan became chief of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), the forerunner of the CIA. Donovan recruited so exclusively from the nations rich and powerful that members eventually came to joke that "OSS" stood for "Oh, so social!"
SNIP...
Historically, the CIA and societys elite have been one and the same people. This means that their interests and goals are one and the same as well. Perhaps the most frequent description of the intelligence community is the "old boy network," where members socialize, talk shop, conduct business and tap each other for favors well outside the formal halls of government.

SPECTERS OF THE PAST
The Klansmen and Mobsters in Donald Trumps Closet
Trumps campaign is haunted by his reported dealings with a Mafia boss, a drug smuggler, and a Russian gangster, as well as his dads alleged Klan arrest.
Michael Daly
The Daily Beast 02.29.16 12:15 AM ET
EXCERPT...
As he expanded into the casino business in Atlantic City, Trump agreed to pay twice the market value for land occupied by a bar owned by the sons of two Philadelphia Mafia bosses, the boys having made a name for themselves as part of a crew called the Young Executioners. The purchase, also reported by Barrett in his book, was reportedly routed through the secretary of Paddy McGahn, a thrice-wounded Marine war hero who had become as influential in his city as Roy Cohn was in New York.
In bringing high rollers to Atlantic City, Trump used a helicopter service owned by Joseph Weichselbaum, a mob-connected drug smuggler who lived in a Trump apartment while awaiting sentencing on narcotics charges in 1987. The case was prosecuted in Ohio but was moved to New Jersey for reasons that remain unclear.
As reported by The Smoking Gun, the case was then assigned to The Donalds sister, federal Judge Maryanne Trump Barry. Some serious ghosts would soon be rising from that supposed coincidence had somebody not thought to quickly shift the case to another judge. Barrys now-deceased husband, John Barry, often served as The Donalds lawyer in New Jersey.
Trumps dealings with mob figures appear to have included at least one member of Chinese organized crime. The Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the U.S. Senates Committee on Government Affairs reported in 1992 that Danny Leung was both a vice president for marketing at Trumps Taj Mahal casino and an associate of the 14K Triad.
He was formerly a business partner with Eddie Louie, a 14K Triad member and the brother of Nickie Louie, aka Louie Yin Poy, a former leader of the Ghost Shadows Gang, the committee reported. Leung has also given complimentary tickets for hotel rooms and Asian shows to numerous members and associates of Asian organized crime.

(9,216 posts)The multi part series elaborates on all manner of criminal connections benefitting Fred and l'il donnie.
One thing that struck me was the connection of Roger Stone to Roy Cohn. I always had Manafort Black & Stone down as intel-connected repug operatives. I just saw a recent article equating Manafort to a mobster, has ties to Russian organized crime. I don't throw out the intel connection idea entirely, but wonder if that group come from organized crime and got involved in repug intel, or if they're from intel and got involved in working with mob connected people. Chicken or egg?
