Ammon Bundy, his brother Ryan Bundy and their co-defendants could have iPads in their jail cells, as long as their attorneys preload the devices with the discovery documents and videos they need to prepare for trial, according to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office ...
But the jail won't allow Internet access
The Bundy brothers who are among 26 defendants indicted on federal conspiracy and weapons charges contend that's insufficient to allow them to prepare for a Sept .7 trial, and suggested in a court filing this week that they may take legal action in state court, alleging violation of their civil rights.
Without the Internet, it would be impossible to access the web-based program Relativity that's being used to review case evidence, the court document says ...

(2,434 posts)and though one needs internet access, they can be precluded from using the internet for anything but reviewing their own documents. We all know what they really want, but there is an obvious compromise if the prosecution knows a good tech.

(34,136 posts)If as a standard thing there is no internet service in the jail - or maybe no wifi - should the taxpayers have to install it just for the benefit of the Bundys?
What do the other inmates do to see the documents from their attorneys? Apparently this hasn't been an issue before now.
If the software is proprietary and only accessible online can't their lawyers save the documents in a more standard format such as PDF and use what we called sneaker net to carry them in? We did it with floppies, zip drives and CDRs, now it's done with thumb drives.
Why isn't that good enough for the Bundys and their attorneys?

(2,434 posts)Each jail probably has it's own rules re: internet access.
Yes, Relativity is proprietary and has a serious cost per user, but that could be on the lawyers.
The documents are most probably already in a Word/Excel format and I am hardly expert enough to know the most cost-effective way to view them.
Methinks they simply want internet access to get to their supporters and I was only suggesting there might be a way to have them view Relativity but not allow full internet access. That would resolve any potential Constitutional issues, but keep them from their hidden agenda.

(50,561 posts)Let's see...they want guns, the Internet, are probably going to be filing a suit claiming the State of Oregon is violating their God-Given Right to Travel. If I didn't know any better I'd say they're planning to break out of jail and are demanding the state give them the tools to do it.
