Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsIs Trump even rich? Why would he fake donate to a Vets charity?
Did he think nobody would find out? Or was this an elaborate stunt for him to then be able to attack the media?
It also looks like his campaign is broke and he's not going to be putting any more of his own money (which he hasn't put very much in at all so far), instead he's going to use the RNC and go groveling to (actual) billionaires like Sheldon Adelson.

(10,437 posts)and now he is begging the RNC to bail him on the $40 million he loaned himself for the primary....after he declared at the beginning he be completely self funded
geeze...another lie??

(19,818 posts)He doesn't have 10 billion dollars. It's much less than he makes out. And he is cheap amongst all the other things he is.

(2,280 posts)For sure part of the reason he's not releasing his tax returns is that he doesn't want people to find out how rich he isn't.
He does own a bunch of buildings, but he might have a lot of debt too.

(43,049 posts)Many of the buildings he claims to own he has a small, 5-10% or so, interest in. He also carries huge amounts of debt and regularly refinances so his net holdings are far less than the gross value.
Some of the buildings he "owns" he merely rents space or collects royalties for his name.
People who have been following Trump for years know to ignore just about anything he says-- he's been full of shit all his life.
Tax returns don't show your net worth, but they do show income, and I betcha his show a really small income. Real estate is great for the way you can claim depreciation on an asset that's appreciating and take a tax loss when you're actually making a profit.

(4,112 posts)Now, that's a lot of money, but a tiny fraction of the $10 billion he claims. Wish I could find that article again - don't remember where I saw it. One of the points they made is that he always cites gross revenues and never talks about expenses. Anyone who measures business in any way knows that gross revenue is not a fair barometer of net worth.

(53,339 posts)He got 5 draft deferments to avoid serving in the Vietnam War. Now, suddenly, he "loves" veterans. And he said avoiding STDs in his playboy days was just like serving in Vietnam combat.
This is one Vietnam vet who is not buying his self-serving crap.

(14,573 posts)whatever his true wealth is, this event is EXACTLY how he makes his money.
He NEVER had any intention of making good on the "fundraiser."
It was an opportunity for him to make splash, get the free media attention and make some money he NEVER intended to pay the vets. The media just had the audacity to call him out this time.
This is what he does.
It is what he has done for his entire "business" career.
And, it is what he has done it for his entire campaign - see his getting the republican party hot and horny over all the money he was going to bring them, then after securing the nomination going to them and saying he was broke and they would have to fund his campaign.
Anyone who EVER thought he was "self funding" his campaign is a fucking fool. He ALWAYS was going to pay himself back FIRST, with interest.
