Donald Trump is a candidate without a campaign - and it's becoming a serious problem.
Republicans working to elect Trump describe a bare-bones effort debilitated by infighting, a lack of staff to carry out basic functions, minimal coordination with allies and a message that's prisoner to Trump's momentary whims.
"Bottom line, you can hire all the top people in the world, but to what end? Trump does what he wants," a source close to the campaign said.
In reporting on Trump's operation, NBC News talked to three Trump aides and two sources working closely alongside the campaign, all of whom requested anonymity in order speak freely.
Veteran operatives are shocked by the campaign's failure to fill key roles. There is no communications team to deal with the hundreds of media outlets covering the race, no rapid response director to quickly rebut attacks and launch new ones, and a limited cast of surrogates who lack a cohesive message.

Ultimately this is what will sink him

(11,619 posts)HIs long history in the media means gives his opponent so much material to attack him that he will be constantly on the defensive.
His failure to use the long campaign season to build a real organization will make it hard to take advantage of any weakness in his opponent.
He also appears to be loath to delegate to experts.
He won't keep his mouth shut.
It is possible that Democrats could not have asked for a better opponent if they had conspired to get him nominated themselves.

(20,851 posts)Citizen United destroyed the party as a political thing. It is now the party of billionaires each clinging to their own particular store bought stooge. There is no organizational body, and no organizational message. When chaos reigns people like Trump are probably the best you can hope for.

(725 posts)I am torn between two theories:
#1 - He was borderline crazy and has now gone over the edge. He's probably not sleeping much and it's clear he can no longer remember what he said even a day or so ago.
#2 - He never really wanted to be president - just wanted to prove he could be if he wanted to. Closer it gets the harder it gets and he's not having fun any more.
He will keep on driving the GOP crazy by being unpredictable and unreasonable to push them to the point of "un-nominating" him - before the convention or after - doesn't really matter.
They will be scrambling trying to play catch up and get another candidate in there and he will be milking his revenge. After all, they caused it - not him.
In the meantime, his "supporters" in all their genius will throw him some riots he's worked so hard to build up.
Just Donald being Donald.

(23,272 posts)I would never assume he's going to be beat for any reason. And now that the RNC knows the problems with Trump's campaign, they'll move swiftly to rectify it.
This election is very very different.

(45,851 posts)I suspect he has some political torpedoes tucked away somewhere, he certainly holed JEB!'s campaign below the waterline and sunk it short order.
He's about 75 or 80% act in my opinion, figuring out what he's really up to is like Kremlinology.
