BEIJING Chinese President Xi Jinping stressed Monday that Beijing will never make concessions over territorial and sovereignty issues, apparently with the deepening confrontation with Washington over the South China Sea in mind.
Between China and the United States, there is confrontation that is difficult to avert and not possible to settle for the time being, Xi said at the opening session of the annual U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue, which kicked off in the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse in Beijing on Monday morning.
China and the United States need to increase mutual trust based on moving in a direction toward a new type of relationship between the two major powers [in which Beijing and Washington will not antagonize or clash with each other], Xi said.
Xi underscored achievements in cooperation between China and the United States over North Koreas nuclear development as well as global issues such as terrorism and climate change. He called for further cooperation between the two countries on those issues.
We must appropriately manage confrontation and sensitive issues, Xi said.

(7,888 posts)It has long been my hope that China would keep North Korea from going nuclear. That hope was dashed. Xi Jinping is using the South China Sea to increase territory and control. China is using "soft" power to take over the region, imo.

(12,618 posts)In my opinion, China is the country we should be afraid of. Historically, China means what it says and does what it says. If it says it's willing to war for the South China Sea, they are. And while China may be greatly overestimating its own power and underestimating ours (not to mention Japan's, Taiwan's, Vietnam's, and the Phillipines), by the time they learn that lesson it may be too late to have averted a massive tragedy.

(12,618 posts)South Korea alone could probably hold them off, even without our help. Lots of bark, very little bite. North Korea makes threats all the time that it doesn't keep. China though? Not so much. When the Chinese make a threat, take it to heart that they mean what they say.

What specifically leads you to believe that?

North Korea has a huge military with old weapons. Last time there was a war like that was in '91 in the Persian Gulf. Didn't turn out too well for the side that had a huge military with older weapons.
In the Korean War the South Koreans proved themselves as valiant warriors, and that was before they had the professional, modern military that they have today. They are nothing like the South Vietnamese were. They can more than hold their own with North Korea.
