Grassley equates Trump's judge comments with Sotomoyor's 'wise Latina' logic
U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley on Wednesday likened presumptive Republican presidential candidate Donald Trumps controversial remarks on a federal judge to a statement frequently made by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor before she was appointed to the high court.
Trumps insistence that the judge in a case concerning Trump University could not be unbiased because of his Mexican heritage is no more troubling than Sotomayors statement that a wise Latina could render a better legal conclusion than a white male with different life experiences, Grassley said during a conference call with Iowa reporters.
Grassley, a Republican, is Iowas senior senator and the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which oversees court appointments.
I think that you dont have any more trouble with what Trump said than when Sotomayor said that when she was found saying in speeches that, quote, A wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male, he said. I dont hear any criticism of that sort of comment by a justice of the Supreme Court.
The comment plays into a simmering debate over Trumps comments, in which he has said U.S. District Court Judge Gonzalo Curiel has an inherent conflict of interest and an absolute conflict in the Trump U. case because of his Mexican heritage.
