Snip < Overdraft fees that banks launched in recent years with little notice to consumers have not gone away despite efforts by consumer groups and regulators to end a practice that generated billions in fees from unwitting customers.
Snip < Notice of pending charges are buried in bank account consumer disclosures that average 69 pages, said Pew Health Group in a report released Friday. For consumers who complain, the banks require binding arbitration through industry channels, not independent regulators, a practice that Pew said discourages customers from being reimbursed.

(37,648 posts)Savings accounts pay almost nothing. So I'll keep my savings in ING, which is also almost nothing, bu tmore than the credit union.
Checking account - no benefit there. I bank at Comerica. No service charge. No interest, but neither does the credit union. Overdraft fees? I don't have overdrafts or NSFs.
I don't see the benefit of a credit union. Maybe loan interest is lower? I don't need a loan...just bought a car. Own my home.

(15 posts)A member at two credit unions.
And while getting rid of the BofA, Chase and Citi options over the years...
Wells Fargo has never pulled anything shady on me like that.
From all my years they seem very different; down right personal.

(9,644 posts)One of my co-workers has his mortgage with Wells Fargo. He is not pleased.
I have a mortgage with a credit union. Aside from yearly increases in property taxes (who says taxes are going down) their handling of my mortgage has been fine. I also have savings and checking accounts at another CU through work.
I could not be happier since ditching BOA. Happy dance.
I dont have a mortgage and perhaps that goes to a national center or something.
They always fix everything and never hit me with any charges, and if they do when I walk into the branch they always remove them.

(2,379 posts)I do have some of my money at a credit union, but I decided to leave my two checking accounts (business and personal) at my regular bank because:
1) They still have free checking for personal accounts and for sole proprietor ("d/b/a" business accounts.
2) Last week, because of a math error on my part, a debit from an online payment I'd scheduled would have overdrawn me by 23 cents and someone from the bank CALLED ME to let me know so I could go online and transfer money over from my other account. She said as long as I did it that day, there would be no penalty fee charged.
3) They state on their website that they're proud to be the only bank in our region who has NEVER sold a mortgage to another entity. All mortgages they originate are serviced by them from start to finish.
4) Sometimes I'll get home from depositing checks from my clients and go online to find they've cleared the entire amount of the check immediately (like payroll checks, though they technically aren't).
EDIT: Grammar correction
EDIT # 2: This is a small community bank with only 6 branches so the money stays local.
