Going cashless;Walmart No Longer Needs You To Bring Your Wallet At least in seven states,

you can forget the cash and cards.

In seven states, you can shop at Walmart even if you leave your wallet at home.

The huge retailer announced Thursday that it has expanded its Walmart Pay option — by which users can upload their payment information once onto the company’s app and then pay digitally when checking out — to Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Georgia.

Customers have been able to use the app to check out in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas since May.

App-based payment is becoming increasingly common. The trend started with Apple Pay, which is available on newer iPhones and can be used at any of Apple’s many retail partners. Individual retail chains are now adding payment functions to their own apps: Dunkin’ Donuts has one, as does Starbucks. (Between its payment app and its gift cards, the coffee giant holds $1.2 billion in deposits from customers, according to the The Wall Street Journal.)

For example, I love amazon's buttons. When you are low on something press the button and an order arrives. I have 10 around the house and may get more. I have not done the pay with cell phone but since soon it won't be an option, I best learn how to do it. I take a picture of my checks now for deposit. I love that. We are so lucky to live in a time of progressive technology. I love a big part of it.

What will you do when cash is not an option? Credit cards are not long for this world either. 20 years from now I'm afraid you may eat those words.

Smartphones have only been around the last 5 years, have they not? This is the same debate we had in the 90s when debit cards first came into existence, people thought cash and checks were going away. But they're still here. Just because Wal-Mart and McDonald's can afford to have cashless apps doesn't mean everyone can or will use them.

STOCKHOLM — Parishioners text tithes to their churches. Homeless street vendors carry mobile credit-card readers. Even the Abba Museum, despite being a shrine to the 1970s pop group that wrote “Money, Money, Money,” considers cash so last-century that it does not accept bills and coins.

Few places are tilting toward a cashless future as quickly as Sweden, which has become hooked on the convenience of paying by app and plastic.

This tech-forward country, home to the music streaming service Spotify and the maker of the Candy Crush mobile games, has been lured by the innovations that make digital payments easier. It is also a practical matter, as many of the country’s banks no longer accept or dispense cash.
