1,000 phony signatures on anti marriage equality initiative petitions

Per the Seattle Times and the Tacoma News Tribune, the opponents of the Marriage Equality law signed by Washington Gov. Gregoire in February have at least 1,000 fraudulent signatures on them. So far the fraudulent signatures have been linked to one paid signature gatherer. The state says it will begin a random check on the validity of signatures by checking a 3% sample. I say we call on the state to check ALL of them.

1. If the sample "fails," (whatever that means), then all the signatures will be checked.

On Sunday, they will begin a random check of 3 percent of the remaining signatures to verify their validity.

The random checks were expected to be completed by the middle of this week.

Failing such a check would not disqualify the referendum from appearing on the ballot. Instead, the state would do a complete hand count of all the signatures.

Eventually, Elections Division staffers will also review all 996 signatures in dispute and turn those findings over to the State Patrol for an investigation.

Forgery of signatures on ballot petitions constitutes a class C felony, punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of $10,000.

5. I'm blown away that they got that many signatures

I expect a goodly number of fraudulent ones, but even with a significant percentage of them being invalid, I had high hopes that the opponents of marriage equality would fail to reach even the minimum number in Washington. I was just there from Memorial Day weekend to the weekend following, and I saw zero effort to collect signatures, even in eastern Washington.

Well, I guess it will be up to the voters to step up and do the right thing one more time, as they have already done twice before.

9. Another version of "Lying for Jesus"

Some Christians appear to think that cheating is ok as long as one is doing it for Jesus. When I was an undergraduate in the seventies we actually had some ministerial candidates who justified cheating on exams because it would help them graduate and move on to saving souls.
