This is exactly in line with the historic mission of USMC. Be the simplest, most effective, bravest and most Spartan fighting force in the nation. The Devil Dogs of WWI and the veterans of Iwo Jima are weeping tears of joy.

(135,425 posts)People who want to join the Service so that the military will pay for surgery will likely not be admitted, though--that's covered further down in the article.
Still, this is a significant leap forward in thinking for DOD.

(6,324 posts)I expect the other services to be similar, but for the Army most medical conditions that required a steady supply of a drug not on the common list and not one that you could just had off a years supply of made you non-deploy able. And any condition that made you that way permanently or for many years was grounds for a medical discharge, because if you can't deploy you are no good to a unit and if they have to keep shuffling you to other assignments that don't deploy that means others take up the slack and go more often.
There was news earlier this year that the Army was going on a big move to identify and remove non-deployables from the rolls again.
As an example, if a Soldier develops sleep apnea and is prescribed a CPAP that makes them non-deplorable and will usually result in a medical discharge.
Every transgendered person I know depends on a pretty intense regular cocktail of hormones, and those are not going to be stocked in the pharmacy on bigger bases and certainly not available on remote FOB's or in the field. They also need pretty regular visits with the doctor prescribing and managing their regimen and that won't be available.
Not saying that applies to every trains person, but I know it affects a lot of cases.
It will be interesting to see how they manage this.
