Jeri (Ryan) had accused Jack Ryan (husband who she later divorced ), who was campaigning for Senate seat in Illinois, of asking her to perform sexual acts with him in public, and in sex clubs. Jeri Ryan described one as "a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling." Jack Ryan denied these allegations. However, this led to Jack Ryan to withdraw his candidacy; his main opponent, Barack Obama, then won the 2004 United States Senate election in Illinois.

Jeri Ryan is not responsible for Barack Obama becoming a Senator. She had filed for divorce in 1998 and the divorce became final in 1999. Jack Ryan was running for the Senate in 2003 when the filings from the divorce were released under a court order to the Chicago media.
Both Jack Ryan and Jeri Ryan fought against making their divorce records public because they wanted to protect their son from harmful information.
I would say that the judge who unsealed the divorce records was more responsible for Barack Obama gaining a Senate seat and John McCain & Sarah Palin are more responsible for him becoming president.

(25,699 posts)I'm sorry but did you just kill Kirk with a ladder? Fuck you Braga.
Still better than 20-something Kirk flying through explosions on a motorcycle while Beastie Boys screams at us.

(129,096 posts)J.J. Abrams justified the re-imagination of the characters based on what happened in "First Contact" (another Berman/Braga beauty). It's sad that Shatner had to try to write his character back into the universe after "Generations" (although that was one of the first movies I bought on laser disc to try out AC-3 Dolby Digital sound).
