So maybe people can now see what happens if you empower the right wingers - you know, the people who think government is useless. And therefore should not be in charge of a government.

Some people may tell themselves it's about "being governed by not your own", though most say it's about keeping European migrants out. But the result is to hand power to the right wing. Who see EU regulations on employment, the environment, or human rights, as a problem.

The road to authoritarianism is often driven by rightist ideologies.
Brexit was an extremist, short term answer to a long term question.

Sometimes I think our founders were right to devise our elector system, so that a simple, popular vote would't get us into trouble.
fRump voters are after all educated, literate, and have the benefit of a semi-free press. But they'd take us over a cliff if allowed.
