I never even saw this thread. Don't know how my answer got here. I was responding to a video by Chris Rock.

(786 posts)People say that it is silly, or it doesn't help and I say that I had been moving into that direction for awhile. Cecil just made me decide to do what I had been wanting to do for awhile. I will always be sickened by what happened to him and I am still sickened by what still happens to any and all animals at the hands of humans. Bowing out of the equation of contributing to the suffering of animals by supporting the way that they are farmed and housed and basically just maintained in meaningless lives by corporate farms just for people to be able to eat more meat than they need to consume.
This is my choice. I hate the "industry". And how the animals are treated. Cecil gave me the courage to follow thru and I thank him. He will always be part of my life because so.

(13,661 posts)If Cecil's senseless, sickening death led to more human compassion for animals, at least some amount of good came from it.
I don't ever order or choose meat, either, though my husband still eats chicken and turkey so I buy it for him.
And it's not so much the eating meat part I object to (though I choose not to). I think humans are omnivorous, and many other animals also eat meat. It's the human gluttony - the absolute over-consumption, and most of all, it's the industry factory-farming that sickens me, here in the US and god-knows-what happens abroad. Animals are sentient, sensitive beings that deserve compassion and happy lives, not to be churned out and slaughtered just for human pleasure (and over indulgence). Not to mention over-fishing, by-catch problems, and all the other issues with seafood.
Humans aren't the only creatures meant to enjoy their short lives on this planet.
If animals were bred in moderation, lived good, happy, humane lives and were slaughtered with absolutely no fear or pain, I might indulge in a steak every once in a while.
