(29,227 posts)I think that Obama would win this going away... and carry the House and Senate.

(335 posts)On he one hand, remember the 22nd was passed by Republicans, out of spite against FDR.
On the other, it might have prevented a third Eisenhower term - and could prevent one for someone like Reagan.
Doesn't it seem strange politically that just after such a popular president as FDR is elected four times, the same voters would pass a constitutional amendment - very hard to pass - rebuking their having elected him four times?

(29,227 posts)FDR died of essentially old age in office
Much like Churchill, people were tired of WWII and it's leaders... Truman won by the skin of his teeth.
But I wasn't around when it passed, but I wonder how rigged the system was to pass it (how close was it, what were the "fear factor" arguments, etc).
Anyway, my argument against is that we essentially elect a 6 year President with a 2 year "caretaker" (lame duck). The reason I say this is that the Presidency is really about the power/fear the President can strike into the hearts of a reluctant Congress... but after his or her last election, that power / fear dissipates fairly quickly.

(14,593 posts)a very, very good, if not downright great president.
I know that I've felt safe with him in office, hard to describe, but that good feeling that everything will be OK because we've got a qualified, competent person in the White House.

He's already written a couple of books-- I'd love for him to write a book about his presidency
Looking forward to following his new career (but missing him so much already)

(81,518 posts)In terms of accomplishments - PARTICULARLY in view of the ridiculously heavy and constant opposition and obstruction - what he's been able to get done - he oughta be up in the #2 spot, right after FDR.
