I had a nice experience at our local farmer's market, today

I was picking up some fresh Michigan sweet corn when this man tapped me on the shoulder and started to gesture - I thought pointing at the plastic bags. So I handed him one. I thought maybe he was deaf, since he didn’t say anything - just gestured.

But that wasn’t what he wanted. Then the woman with him came up to me and said, in a very heavy accent "He doesn’t speak English but he wants you to know that the corn in the bin, by the door, is much bigger and nicer than this corn.” It suddenly dawned on me, from their appearance and accent, that these people are, more than likely, very recent immigrants from the Middle East. This man’s face was a study in delight, as he non-verbally encouraged me to go to the other bin and he smiled when I nodded my understanding. So, I did, and he was right. I thanked him with a big smile and a wave.

I hope they enjoyed that corn as much as I did.
