(31,849 posts)Long was/is a bigot ... We got that.
Now ... can we talk about the white supremacist system in which he/we/I live, and how that might be relevant to Long's actions?
Joe the Revelator
(14,915 posts)Bigots get no excuses from me, no matter what color their skin is.

(31,849 posts)white supremacy.
So ... So ... transparent, you are,
Joe the Revelator
(14,915 posts)then by all means, explain that to me and make all the excuses you want.
And I'm being transparent because I'm not trying to hide anything. Unlike you, I don't constantly play word games.
It is what it is, this was a radical black dude who hated white people and wanted other blacks to rise up in a revolution. Like other crackpots, he thought the best way to make that happen was to touch off the powder keg himself.
Now your turn, how is this white people's fault?
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)Let me ask ... what is your understanding of white supremacy? And, how do you imagine people suffering under such a system might respond?
To help you understand my point, please re-visit the "populist" election of 2016 arguments, the Brexit arguments, and all that is discussed in progressive spaces.
Joe the Revelator
(14,915 posts)You get mad at me for not starting the conversation you want to have. I start it for you, then you completely ignore my entire post and pose a completely different question.
I reframe my initial question and we can go from there.
In your opinion, what travesty did this man undergo at the hand's of the 'white supremacist system' that would explain why he would think that killing 3 cops was a rational and justifiable action to take? At what point, in your argument, does murder become unavoidable and a response to the system, instead of the responsibility of the killer?
1StrongBlackMan
(31,849 posts)I cannot speak to Long's personal experience; but, clearly, his calling was, to him, not less compelling than the calls to "revolution" made by progressives regarding "neoliberalism"/economic inequality.
Murder (or killing) is never an appropriate response to systemic inequities.

(10,926 posts)Evidently the channel is Long's, and that's him in the videos. He killed several people today. How are those videos crap? People have speculated about him all day. Are the videos not allowed to be part of the information people use to speculate?

(31,849 posts)over-kill and/or agenda pushing ... don't you?
And BTW ... If I comment that the sky is blue, will you feel the need to question it or ask me how I came to that conclusion?

Cosmo is a nutritionist, life coach, dietitian, personal trainer, author and spiritual advisor. At the age of sixteen, after self-educating himself about fitness, nutrition, and diet, Cosmo lost over eighty pounds in six months. He then joined the United States Marine Corps and earned the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in less than three years as one of the Corps most physically fit Marines. During his five years as a Marine, Cosmo spent two years in Japan and did one tour in Iraq. While stationed in San Diego, California, Cosmo became a highly esteemed and sought after nutritionist and personal trainer. After completing an Associate's degree in General Studies at Central Texas College, Cosmo then attended Clark Atlanta University to further his education. After a year and a half at Clark Atlanta as a dean's list student, he had a spiritual revelation that resulted in him dropping out of college, selling his two cars, giving away all of his material possessions, packing two suitcases and journeying to Africa-his ancestral homeland. While in Africa, Cosmo's spiritual journey took him across Rwanda, Ethiopia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Egypt, Ghana and Burkina Faso. During that time he frequented the highly treasured and revered mountainous regions of Africa and was taught by Africa's native spiritual practitioners and elder holistic healers. Cosmo has been an avid student of nutrition, health, fitness, personal transformation and spiritual mastery since the age of sixteen. He conducts sports nutrition workshops locally, nationally, and internationally. He has traveled nationally to over thirty States in the U.S., and internationally to The Bahamas, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Maldives (Island country near India), Iraq, and Africa to name a few. In addition to over twelve years of health, fitness, and nutrition experience, Cosmo also has extensive sports nutrition, life-coach, and spiritual counseling experience with fitness enthusiasts, professional athletes and spiritual seekers. In one-on-one sessions, he coaches his clients on ways to create a daily food plan that is successful and can be maintained over the long-term. He also helps them reach their optimal weight, diet, spiritual and personal growth goals.

(961 posts)He had most definitely reached the conclusion that protest wasn't going to go anywhere and that "blood and money" was the only language that would make people listen. I've heard those same points made in more subtle ways by some activists in the last few months. Wouldn't surprise me to learn this influenced him.
After Dallas I kinda figured there might be some copycat actions. Sad to see that might very well be the case.

(32,705 posts)Peaceful protests have been going on for over 2 years now. NOTHING has been accomplished. Cops can still kill unarmed, law abiding citizens without concern over cameras or anything because the rules don't apply to them.
What we need RIGHT NOW is for Congress to update the civil rights act with protections against unwarranted police murder, brutality, profiling, and harassment. Nothing short of that will calm things down.
