The hope is that Donald and his advisers fatally damage his run in some way they cannot recover from. And that damage also takes down a lot of GOPPERS even the ones who have stayed away from the convention.
You would think that what Trump and his ilk have already done would be enough to crash the GOP. Seems like the polls do not show that reality even though these polls are early. Trump would be like Hurricane Katrina on steroids politically if he were elected. Anyone with a brain could see such a storm coming. The problem is that there are too many people with no brain.

(2,348 posts)... even if the Dems were to nominate someone completely distasteful. So there's a solid block of 35-40% of the country that will vote for the proverbial ham sandwich, if the party nominated it. (The sandwich would be polling better)

(1,965 posts)I am surrounded by such folks, here in central Illinois.
Of the ones I have acquaintance or some interactions with, the majority seem to be some combination of pretend xtian, teabagger, drumpfazoid, science denier, drooling shit-kicker or gun humper. The things they seem to have in common are the polished ability to parrot the RW noise machine and a compulsion to vote for anyone sporting that dreadful r by their name.
One such guy, a staunch union member who knows and often preaches on which party is the threat to his wages and benefits, his very way of life, how and why that party should be voted out of office, told me right after the '12 election that he'd been forced to vote for rMoney because *n-words* aren't ready for higher office... No brain indeed.
