Politico Reporter Admits The Press Is Covering For Republican Obstructionismby Tommy Christopher | 11:18 am, June 14th, 2012
Gov. Granholm asked Williams, Do the Capitol Hill journalists whisper about this obstructionism on the part of Republicans?
Theres not so much a whisper, Williams replied. Its pretty plain. A lot of people in a lot of newsrooms have a duty to be objective here, and I think thats one of the reasons the poll numbers are so low, because we try to present news in an objective fashion, we try not to necessarily focus on what they said, and on the agenda, because they do have, for lack of a better term, legitimate reasons for saying what theyre saying. They are philosophically opposed with the President, and they can extrapolate and say that philosophical opposition is whats leading them to vote against the President at every turn.
But sooner or later, it becomes pretty obvious, Williams continued, especially when the President points out that some of the things hes proposing that will fix the economy in years past have been universally loved by Republicans. They voted for transportation packages, they voted for infrastructure spending in the pastthese were not controversial proposals until President Obama seemed to put his name on it. Then, all of a sudden, it became something that was untouchablesomething the republicans didnt even want to consider, much less hold a vote on.
You said something really interesting there, Gov. Granholm responded, which is one of the reasons that the number of that poll might be so lowthe 49%is that the media feels like its got to be even-handed and on this channel, I think we would call that false equivalency. The media knows very well what the obstruction is.
And there are many who would agree with you that it is false equivalency, Williams allowed, but nonetheless, one reason why that still sticks and still maintains a presence in most newsrooms is not only because of integrity of individual journalism, but also because the conservative Republican message machine is very, very good at vilifying people who they believe have crossed the line into advocacy, who have done a number on what they believe is their fair and objective way of looking at things and looking at the White House agenda.

(5,955 posts)Doing everything you can to make policies that are only 30% popular look as good as policies that are 70% popular? Otherwise, the fact that Democratic Party policies are more popular would give one party an unfair advantage.

(16,094 posts)More like these "journalists" are scared to death of the Republicans!
It's kind of a shame, journalists in totalitarian countries have the courage to speak up, while in the "...land of Free Speech" they seem lack the guts to point out the obvious...

(2,442 posts)Every single person on TV is making at least $250K per year... they don't want to rock their own boat. They have a gravy paycheck.. and will not confront any politician that might come back and jeopardize their own job. So of course the Repugs know this... and put the pressure on any reporter.
Investigative Journalism is dead in the United States!

(11,366 posts)The average starting salary for a journalist is $25,000 - even the television reporters who are not anchor or pundits make peanuts.
That's why so many go into punditry: to feed their families after years of starving.
I left reporting because I was going through a divorce and couldn't afford to feed my son and myself on $18,000 a year in 2001.

(20,317 posts)"saying both sides are equal"?
If one man hits another in the nose and the second man doesn't fight back, you can objectively state that one man punched the other. You don't have to say "two men were involved in a fight" to be objective.
Are these people really that stupid?

(5,955 posts)9000 climate scientists say Global Warming is a fact. 3 scientists, all being paid by the American Enterprise Institute, say it isn't, but they have to give 'both sides' of the argument equal time.
It reminds me of that scene in BLACKADDER II, when Blackadder finds out that Captain Redbeard Rum's ship doesn't have a crew on board.
Blackadder: "I was under the impression that it was standard practice for a ship to have a crew."
Redbeard: "Opinion is divided on the subject, my lord."
Blackadder: "It is?"
Redbeard: "Yes. All the other captains say it is, I say it isn't."

(3,538 posts)(NPR included) to carry clips of Repugs saying "Obama promised to end partisan bickering in Washington; Obama broke his promise!!!"
As if there is ANYTHING Obama could to to get obstructionist Republicans to work with him. And they'll run quotes like that without even a hint of rebuttal. It's sick.

(12,552 posts)provides cover for the subtle propaganda spewed by the corporate media. Our media would make Goebbels blush.
We have ceased to exist as a free democracy. It's for sale to the highest bidder. The Fourth Estate had become a Fifth Column, dedicated to undermining the people in favor of the wealthy elites who sign the checks.
The great experiment of letting people govern themselves has crashed and burned.

(4,982 posts)The defect in this thinking is that liberalism, in the classic sense, is an absence of bias, whereas conservatism is necessarily biased, is, by definition, a narrowing of thought. A Democrat can favor a tax cut if its whats best for the country, or a tax increase if its best for the country. A conservative can only do one of those things. A Democrat can (and most do) personally oppose abortions, and try to reduce the number of abortions through education and access to contraception, or by supporting legislation that restricts abortion access. A Conservative can only do one of those things.
The press needs to realize that when conservatives whine about liberal bias, what theyre really complaining about is an absence of conservative bias. Until they do, things like the plainly obvious GOP sabotage of the economy will continue unchecked.

(20,450 posts)of shit that the Corporate Media does to cover up for Republican lies in general. Not just during the Obama administration, but especially during the Bush administration.
Liberal_Stalwart71
(20,450 posts)forceful enough, please refer back to this exchange! THEY ARE!! Corporate Media chooses NOT to cover it! Or, to run to Republicans for photo ops and impromptu press conferences. Republicans overrrepresent Sunday talk shows by a 3 to 1 ratio! It's not unplanned, folks! It's deliberate! Just as many of us have been screaming now for the past few years! It's deliberate! It's a conspiracy! And the Corporate Media is complicit. We saw this with our own eyes during the stimulus and health care debacles.
PLEASE WAKE UP, DEMOCRATS!!!

(57,936 posts)But we have the opportunity to sometimes watch cuts from MSNBC because we have Netflix and Roku. Somehow, without watching regular TV, we can see specific segments of MSNBC. It is through our internet. I don't know how it works. We watch ads and then the programming. I haven't seen Rachel Maddow on it yet.
I refuse to pay for cable because they present Fox News along with the standards, ABC, etc. I consider Fox News to be sheer right-wing propaganda. I will not support it, not in the slightest.

(10,497 posts)They are both necessary for this minority to continue their rule. Why did Wall Sreet donate 20 million to the New York City cops at the beginning of the OWS protest. What did you see right after, police supervisors in white shirts spraying corralled women to the astonishment of the rank and file around them. Why do you not see follow up stories on the BP oil spill victims? You only see BP's PR BS! The 1% wrote the laws already and are firming up control. We have to wake up enough people to fight, otherwise, we will have to wait until the low info voters cannot afford cable or SAT.
