I view the flag as a symbol of slavery, oppression, ethnic cleansing (see native Americans) war and corporate profit.

Screw the flag!

The so-called pledge of allegiance was created by a publisher of a children's literature magazine at about the turn of the 20th century. It took years, and a World War to bring it to Congress where it was adopted, with some modifications, mostly political.

In 1954, in the midst of McCarthyism and anti-Soviet politics -- that hedonistic, atheist country -- the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization, put forth a bill that was adopted by both houses of Congress to add under God to the text.

Look up the history yourself.

As a proud government employee, once with a DOD secret clearance, and then as a public school teacher, I can state that the only required constitutional oath is to swear allegiance to the US Constitution.

The flag is nothing but a pale symbol for that which we should all recognize our allegiance, the US Constitution.

The flag is a piece of cloth, not the body of law that makes the US great. I wish more people would realize that.
