NEW YORK -- The leader of a New York City mosque and another man have been been fatally shot in a brazen daylight attack.

Police say 55-year-old Imam Maulama Akonjee and a 64-year-old man were shot in the back of the head as they left the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in Queens shortly before 2 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses told CBS station WCBS that the imam had given a 1 p.m. prayer service and was walking home with another member of the mosque when both men were gunned down.

Police haven't determined a motive, but many from the surrounding community who attend the mosque are calling this a hate crime.

Rushing to judgement in a situation where the facts aren't known isn't particularly useful. Is it likely he was killed because he was Muslim? More likely than not I believe, but it could have been someone who felt he wasn't sufficiently ardent, or it could have been some idiot who thinks all Muslims are evil and has a giant Trump poster on his bedroom wall.

If it's the latter, Trump's campaign will be in flames whether that's found out today, tomorrow or the next day.

But for the sake of not fanning further violence, the proper authorities need to do the proper investigation.
