"There were no emergencies. The fire truck had been called to douse an earsplitting wind machine that lashed Nik Wallenda with mist while the wire-walker paced back and forth on a tightrope a few metres above ground.
The session aimed at replicating the wet, noisy conditions Mr. Wallenda will face Friday evening as he tries to become the first human to walk directly over the Niagara Falls.
On Thursday, the Florida-based circus performer spent his final hours before the highly promoted event signing autographs and inspecting the seven-tonne cable that has been installed over the falls this week.
He got up on the overland part of the wire to see how it felt. On his feet, he had special elk-skin moccasins his mother made, with suede-like soles that become stickier when wet..."

(19,841 posts)It's performance but it's also an extreme mental discipline...of course people do this kind of stuff all the time in so many areas of life. Nik Wallenda just makes it immediately and dramatically visible. I take it as a metaphor for overcoming fear and inspiring others to "great heights."

My issue is only with that unfortunate side to our society... those who only attend car races in the hopes of seeing a catastrophic crash--and the media that hopes to capture it in all its gory detail. But, I suppose much of this is locked in our dna.

(19,841 posts)We like spectacle and risk. We like to see people flirting with the very real fear that is in us all --ie. fear of death.
I grant you that some like to see disaster more than others, but I don't think you can say that people who go to car races are any more likely to be wanting to see a crash than the followers of extreme skiing, for example. Not many people go to see the death of their heroes, but they are attracted because of the extreme risk. That's what makes them heroes. They face death and win, most of the time.

(19,841 posts)...but right now Wallenda needs us to keep him UP in the air...not imagine him in the water.
Not arguing with you, just chattin' -- I'm fascinated with this cuz I'm such a klutz I can't get 4 feet off the ground with any confidence. I admire people who scale mountains, sail oceans, fly to the moon, etc. I guess my heroes in physical feats are kinda loners testing themselves.
Imagination has power. I try to imagine him walking across confidently and achieving what has got to be the greatest achievement of a very unusual career.
