http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000691874/article/colin-kaepernick-ill-continue-to-sit-during-national-anthemI am an old guy. I served my country such that I was on and already off active duty before 1970. My Dad and all my uncles served in WWII. I have ALWAYS stood with my hat off and my hand on my heart during the National Anthem. I will continue to do so, in all likelihood.
But make no mistake. This young man is the very portrait of bravery to do what he says is his doing I admire him. I support what he is doing. It may not be what I would do, but I absolutely understand why he is.
I salute you, Colin.

(11,938 posts)Latest quote from Colin Kaepernick
"You have Hillary who has called black teens or black kids super predators, you have Donald Trump whos openly racist. We have a presidential candidate who has deleted emails and done things illegally and is a presidential candidate. That doesnt make sense to me because if that was any other person youd be in prison. So, what is this country really standing for?"

(53,339 posts)When we do it we don't have cameras on us or people quoting us in the media.
To tell the truth, I'm not a sports fan and never heard of the guy before this dustup.
For myself, as a vet I stand and follow the protocols. What others do doesn't concern me, though I respect protest.
As for what he has to say about Hillary? I'm with her, all the way, and I am not concerned abouit what a prominent athlete, even one in the national spotlight now, has to say about her.
This, too, shall pass. Just let it go.

(39,374 posts)but Hillary has done more for social justice in this country than he ever will or even cares to know about. This isn't meaningful; it's grandstanding.

(7,906 posts)If Colin doesn't want to stand for the National Anthem, I'm with him.
If Colin is a friend of the Black Live Matter Movement, I'm with him.
But since Colin is on the verge of being cut, I'm skeptical of his intent. It seems he has found a good way to get his name out there.
Colin is a millionaire. He also is a well known athlete.
He could do so much for the Black Lives Matter Movement.
Instead, he seems to be using it for his own self preservation.
I'm disappointed in Colin, to say the least.

Why the hell should I care about this when we have much bigger fish to fry?

(3,784 posts).............then you MUST love Freedom of Speech, as it is one of the pillars that this country is built upon. And if you love Freedom of Speech, then you must understand that Freedom of Speech includes the freedom to NOT participate in the National Anthem. It's exactly the kind of freedom that the Founding Fathers envisioned when they wrote the First Amendment. The freedom to engage in unpopular speech. I think the Founding Fathers would be proud of Colin Kaepernick, or at least of the fact that they created a country free enough to allow him to register his complaints in whatever way he chooses.
I always stand AND remove my hat (something almost nobody does anymore--trust me, I look) for the National Anthem, but that's just me. People should be free to make their own choices and must be able to exercise their right to NOT participate if they want to. Forcing people to engage in rituals, take loyalty oaths, etc. is a very slippery slope toward Totalitarianism.
