Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsNow that Russian hackers have broken into our election
software, there has to be increased use of paper ballots.
Stalin was quoted as saying: "I don't care how people vote. I care who counts the votes!"
Without paper ballots, Putin may well count our votes!
Let's demand paper ballots that we can count and recount (to verify)!

(1,779 posts)And Governor Don Siegelman of Alabama is still incarcerated after his votes were flipped in the middle of the night. And of course, the 2000 election was the pits with the Bushistas scrubbing voters from the roles.
Now comes Chris Kobach who is trying to secretly scrub many thousands of people from voting in Kansas and other states.
Who is to say that their programs are unhackable?
Also, importantly, if voters have less trust in the honesty of the voting system, they will be much less likely to vote.
Restoring an open election system -- including paper ballots -- will help restore confidence in our voting system.
Thom Hartmann says that our voting system is the very beating heart of democracy. We should do everything we can to ensure that it is functioning.

(26,795 posts)And I believe something was terribly wrong in Ohio...though I do not think the machines were hacked to do it.
And I don't necessarily believe that Russian's are messing with these systems...although they may be just as capable of doing so as others likely are.

(15,235 posts)The Republican National Committee is capable of anything; and has the resources to hire the best hackers in the world. Hacking voting machines is the only way Trump can win, which is the reason he befriends Russian crime czars and a North Korean tyrant, with no internet, if China decides to disconnect the small nation. Trump doesn't realize that China maintains all North Korean internet services.
"North Korea says Trump isn't screwy at all, a wise choice for president
North Korea has backed presumptive U.S. Republican nominee Donald Trump, with a propaganda website praising him as "a prescient presidential candidate" who can liberate Americans living under daily fear of nuclear attack... http://www.reuters.com/article/us-northkorea-usa-trump-idUSKCN0YN35S
Donald Trumps imagined meeting with Kim Jong-un is a reminder that businessmen make terrible presidents

How do you know he never said it?

(15,429 posts)It doesn't appear in any text or recording of anything Stalin ever said.
The fake quote is attributed to him because he was a dictator but the man never said it.
He never had to stand for a popular election in his life.

(1,779 posts)Stalin quote, the correctness of the sentiment is what makes it important, and to say that Stalin never said it does not remove the correctness of it -- as Blackwell in Ohio, voter suppression successes in the South, etc., demonstrate.
The will of the voters can be subverted in many different ways.
Raising doubt about the honesty of the voting system is clearly one way to reduce voter participation, etc

(15,429 posts)All evidence points to the Jesus Christ of the New Testament being a composite fictitious character., most likely of several Rabbinical teachers of the time.
And attribution of fake quotes is a tactic of the likes of David Barton.

(1,779 posts)mean that we shouldn't be wary of people who want to steal the vote from us.
Somehow this has devolved into a shaggy dog narrative. and I sure agree with you about David Barton's made up quotes making up nonsense about the country being funded by fundamentalist Christians with nary a Deist, etc.
However, I am not sure why someone would take on the often cited "quote" from Stalin. Even if not stated by him (the provenance might be murky), the point made is absolutely germane.

(15,235 posts)With such a small investment, there are FAR more Chinese hackers, working in the internet of foreign nations, including Russia. In Chinese media, Trump is a joke China plans to laugh at for eight years.
