Still seems surreal how the President of a sovereign country could allow himself and his office to be used as a stage for a tyrannical candidate of another country. To stand next to Trump and let him appear in the same league of other world leaders should bring shame to the Mexican people, the same way his bigoted antics here bring shame on us. Sending a tweet out hours later will not erase the image of Mexico's grandest office being used as a TV show backdrop. Trump used Mexico as a set decoration knowing that any blowback will not erase his desired image of greatness in a country's palace.
Watching Peña Nieto stare lifelessly as Trump lied once again while on their soil is hard to believe after he savaged their people for over a year. Ugh.

(28,151 posts)I saw a clever and shrewd move by the President of Mexico. He had the world stage with all, and I do mean ALL, of America watching. He stood calmly while Trump blathered on with his bullshit. He then made brilliant counterpoints to all the lies Trump has been telling. Then it was leaked that Trump is lying about what was discussed privately, lol, what a FAIL! Epic, no, YUGE!!1!
Add to that Trump was all polite and shit while in enemy territory but was all bad-ass once safely over the border, yeah. Impressive bad-ass cred NOT achieved.
What a loser.

(9,148 posts)If the above theory was true then it backfired on a huuuge scale.
If he was trying to simply offer a shot at diplomacy then..
Whoops! So much for trying to play an honorable game with Trump.

(28,151 posts)But he got to stick it to Trump on the world stage. I don't care if it was just an indulgent moment of satisfaction or a shred political move, that fact remains.

(9,033 posts)"sticking it to Trump" , they read it as caving to the world's biggest asshole. "Sticking it to Trump" would have required a public apology to the Mexican people or, failing that, getting whacked like a piñata in public. Imo they are right.

I mean, really. An objective "here's how I saw it" and how many posts did you have to repeat the same stuff? Like life itself depended on it or something. Wow.
It was a remark made in passing that I would've forgotten by now if not for your...reaction. I practice, and recommend you try, not giving two shits about remarks on an obscure DB on the tubes.
Now I remember why I frequent DU less and less each year.
Bye now.

(53,410 posts)His name is Peña Nieto. This is a common mistake Americans make regarding the last name of people from Mexico. The persons last name is as follows:
The person's first last name is his father's last name. The person's second last name is his mother's last name. The President's children have the fist last name of Peña. Their second last name is THEIR mothers name, not the President's mother's name. This makes the mother's last name as important as the father's in a geneological sort of way.

(9,033 posts)with an approval rating of 20% and after his "clever and shrewd" performance yesterday it will go even lower.
And it seems none of Trump's supporters see his performance as you do, which really shouldn't come as a surprise.
